        Song:   Kaali kaali raat re
                Dil bada sataaye
                Teri yaad aaye
                Teri yaad aaye

        Film:   Saiyan (1951)
        Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
        Music:  Sajjad Hussain
        Lyrics: D N Madhok
        *ing:   Madhubala, Ajit, Sajjan

I  have  no  words  or  ideas  to  even  begin  describing   this
magnificent  melody.  All that needs to be said and done has been
said and done... I'll just include some of the thoughts expressed
on this by some RMIMers when some discussion was generated on the
song a while ago :

[snip] This is one of the most 'alternative' melodies  I've  ever
heard-  the  atmosphere  this song creates is just ethereal. (Try
waking up at 5:30 AM and playing  this  song  at  a  low  decibel
level,  and  you'll know what I mean.)

[snip] (I could not sleep since I could not get this song out  of
my  head)  and  heard  it  at a soft volume with the lights in my
house turned off. There was condensation on my windows,  and  the
atmosphere  was misty ,and there was a gentle falling snow, on an
already smooth white ground. The  effect  was  ethereal,  divine,
heavenly.

[snip] This is my favorite song in this desert-island  effort  by
the  peerless  Sajjad H. In fact, many people consider this to be
his greatest song. As usual, it is a tough one to  sing  and  the
orchestration  is  totally  awesome.  The antaras, like you found
out, are very interestingly tuned. The first antara (from memory)
is:
        jhooton se pyaar kiya
        haaye kya kiya
        saare jahan ka
        dukh le liya
ab ro ro sawan jaaye The singing is to  be  heard  to  be
believed.  The  last line is sung like only the Great Lady could.
This is a true masterpiece.
