        Song:   Sataayega kise tuu aasmaan
                Jab hum nahiin honge
                Diye hain tuune aese gham
                Kabhii jo kam nahiin honge

        Film:   Shisham (1952)
        Singer: Mukesh
        Music:  Roshan
        Lyrics: Indeewar
        *ing:   ?

There's got to be some arcane telepathy at work here,  Snehal.  I
had this written up for today's ATMJH a while ago, in remembrance
of Mukesh's 22nd death anniversary, and the first article  I  see
on  RMIM today morning is your insightful review on Mukesh-Roshan
! Great minds, etc.. :-))

Anyway, as the article articulates (there's a tongue-twister  for
you  :-)) the Mukesh-Roshan combo was an example of true synergy,
a musical symbiosis that bequeathed film and music buffs  a  host
of  truly  magical  tunes, especially in the early to mid- 50s. A
fact that, put together with Snehal's post,  has  spurred  me  to
spend  the  next few days on some of my favorite tracks from this
legendary duo.

"Sataayega tuu.." is one of the  three  consummately  captivating
Mukesh  tracks  from  "Shisham",  a  must-buy for Lata and Mukesh
fans. Now, I haven't heard his cousins sing (:-)), but this early
voice  of  Mukesh,  its  deep, resonant timbre and of course, the
inescapable trademark- the nasal tinge, is an aural ambrosia. The
song  itself  is  a  restrained melody with a faintly wistful air
about it, self-deprecating at times :
sitaare tuutne se aasmaan ka kya bigadtaa hai
kami kya hogii duniya mein agar ik hum nahiin honge
...and strangely defiant at others :
hain jab tak hum tabhii tak dushmani hai humse duniya ko
yehi duniya hamen dhuundegi hum jis dam nahiin honge

Wonderful tune and orchestration.

I've always noticed one thing about Roshan's music - it grows  on
you.  The  song  may  not  strike  you as forcefully on the first
hearing as, say,  a  song  like  "aayega  aanewaala"  would,  but
revisit the song twice, and you get completely hooked. There is a
modest allure in his tunes that gradually impresses  itself  upon
listeners.   Happened  to  me  with  almost  all  of  his  music,
especially the Hum Log/Shisham soundtracks.

More  Mukesh  to  follow,  but  before  that,  let  me  list  the
Mukesh/Lata  treasure  "Shisham"  carries, in addition to today's
selection :

1 sapnon mein aana chhed chhed jaana (Mukesh, Lata)
2 baje baansuri chale saanwari (Lata)
3 muskuraahat tere hothon ki mera singaar hai (Lata)
4 ek jhuuti si tasalli woh mujhe deke chale (Mukesh...
                                                a HAUNTING tune)
5 banaaii hai itni badii jisne duniya (Lata...
                                      my favorite Lata track from
                                      this film)

PS Who's in the movie ?
