Thanks to all RMIMers, especially to all the participants, for making this a success. We do understand that the overlap between Chitrahaar - 10 and this RJGK may have placed a lot of restrictions on many of you. We appreciate the efforts that you have put in to send in your entries. Here is a list of all the people who sent in their entries. Participants who sent in solo entries (15 entries in all) - S.Jagadish - The first RMIMer to send in his entry Vish Krishnan Sami Mohammed Ramesh 'Yesrafidas' Hariharan Anup Pandey Ashok Dhareshwar Kuntal Shah Satish Subramanian Surendra Rajak Sreedhar Marella Ravi Narayanan Ramesh 'Astable' Hariharan Deepak Marda S.Sreedhar Vandana Venkatesan Participants who sent in their entries as a team (17 in all) - Neeraj Malhotra and Prince Kohli Suman Narula and Raj Iyengar Shalini Razdan and Mr. And Mrs. Pintu Diwana The husband and wife team of Harmesh Kaur and Surjit Singh Balaji and Malini Neha Desai and Ajay Divekar Veena Nayak and Ajay Nerurkar Sandeep Joshi and Ashish Bokil Madhu and Aniruddha Deglurkar Pavan Kumar Desikan and U.V.Ravindra Renu and Neeraj Deshmukh Kalyan Kolachala, Atul Gupta, Ikram Ahmed Khan, and Ikram's father Indira Kuruganti and Suneeta Donepudi The husband and wife team of Manjeet and Manjeet Rekhi Pankaj, Dharmesh, and Aditi Sunil Kosalge and Harish Suvarna Jyothi and Sridhar Thus we had 32 entries and 53 participants. Thanks to all for making this such a success. We did have the fear of drawing a poor response, given the short period of time between Chitrahaar - 10 and RJGK - 33. Till the last but one day, we had received only 17 entries, adding some sense of disappointment to us. But the last day saw a shower of entries from RMImers and we were just overjoyed to have elicited all the responses. Some quick and interesting notes about this RJGK. We were very happy to receive entries from some new RMIMers. Their enthusiasm and love for Hindi film music drove them to send in their entries. Welcome Raj Iyengar, Suman Narula, Manjeet and Manjeet, and company. May the tribe increase !!!! This RJGK also saw the return of an RMIMer after a gap of a year and a half. Welcome back, Deepak Marda. Hope you continue to have fun in RMIM. We also received entries from nettors who are not regular RMIMers. Jyothi and Sridhar, who we met recently at a music mehfil at their house, enthusiastically sent in their entry. They even forwarded a copy of the quiz to Ravi Narayanan (another music lover who was at the mehfil) and he took the time to send in his entry too. Great job guys !!!! Keep it going !!!! This RJGK also saw one of the entries being handed, not via e-mail, not via the Web, not via HTML forms, not via the US Postal Service or any other mail or delivery service, but, PERSONALLY. Now that must be something new to these quizzes. Having labored till the previous night (long distance phone call to Ashish et al) Sandeep Joshi drove to our place on the last day of the quiz and personally gave us his team's entry (orally). That goes to show the passion that RMIMers have for music. We, the hosts, felt that we *_should_* make a mention of this novel mode of entry, which may probably be rarely emulated. Let us also not forget our regular RMIMers, the silent and the not so silent ones, who have always contributed immensely towards the success of the newsgroup and the quizzes. We have derived tremendous knowledge from the postings on RMIM and hope that this will inspire more and more music lovers to contribute to RMIM and share their love for Indian music with the others. Keep it going guys !!!! FEEDBACK - Our sincere gratitude to all RMIMers who took the time to send in their valuable feedback to us. The general idea that we got from all the feedback was that the theme was very well liked by all RMIMers. There were some people who felt that more could have been done to make the quiz easier. As we said earlier, this quiz was compiled at a short notice and there would definitely have been room for improvement. Thanks for the encouraging words, guys. We will make a detailed posting about the feedback provided by RJGKers at a later date. We hope that it will help future compilers of the quiz. So now, here are the answers that all of you are looking forward to. 1. The advent of the Angry "Young" and "Middle-Aged" man in the late 70s and the 80s saw the gradual fade-away of this romantic superstar of the early 70s. Nevertheless, he did come out with a few successes during this period (the 80's). One such movie had him pairing with the prima-donna of the so-called art films. Khaiyyam's lilting music to Gulzar's lyrics propelled this duet to the top of the charts. Male - Jahaan se tum mod mud gaye thhe Yeh mod ab bhi wahin pade hain Female - Hum apne pairon mein jaane kitne Bhanwar lapate hue khade hain Song : Kishore - Hazaar raahein mud ke dekhin Kaheen se koi sadaa na aayee Lata - Badee wafa se nibhaayee toone Hamaaree thhodee si bewafaaee Movie : Thodisi Bewafaaee Cast : Rajesh Khanna, Shabana Azmi Singer(s) : Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar MD : Khaiyyam Lyricist : Gulzar Ashok - Great beginning ! Looks like would be a sumptuous meal. Anup - You know what - I give you full points for starting with a KK/Lata song and penned by Gulzar :) Music of Khaiyyam is like "sone pe suhaagaa". Vandana - Great lyrics, even though people told me the movie is bakwaas. SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 14 14 17 17 Please read this as - From the 15 Solo entries, 14 entries had an answer for the question. Out of these 14, all 14 gave the correct answer to the question. Similarly, out of a total of 17 TEAM entries, 17 entries had an answer to the question, and all the 17 gave the correct answer. 2. Indian film music directors have always "Drawn Inspiration" from Western Music. If it was Beethoven's Symphony which "inspired" Salil Chaudhry to create the awesome piece in Chhaayaa, here it is Elvis "The King" Presley, whose tune found its way into the hearts of this MD duo. The film, starring the hero, whose films inevitably ended up as Silver Jubilee hits, and the future Mrs. Dilip Kumar, revolves around the soul of a dead man trying to get to his beloved through his look- alike. Zindagi ke har ik mod pe main Geet gaataa chalaa jaa rahaa hoon Bekhudi kaa yeh aalam na poochho Manzilon se badha jaa rahaa hoon Manzilon se badhaa jaa rahaa hoon Song : Kaun Hai Jo Sapnon Mein Aayaa Kaun hai jo dil mein samaayaa Lo jhuk gayaa aasmaan bhee Ishq meraa rang laayaa O priyaa aa...... Movie : Jhuk Gayaa Aasmaan Cast : Rajendra Kumar, Saira Banu Singer : Md. Rafi MD : Shanker - Jaikishen Lyricist : Hasrat Jaipuri Indira - The clue erroneously attributes Salil's composition to Beethoven. Methinks, the correct attribution is Mozart's Symphony #5. Hosts - Thanks a lot for the correction. Ashok - Ouch! Bit on a stone already ! SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 13 13 16 16 3. The recepient of last year's Dada Saheb Phalke Award has always been regarded as the tragedy king of Hindi cinema. His intense involvement with his roles can rarely be paralleled. This movie, starring this thespian, has him in his usual role of the lover who has given his heart to his lover only to get pain in return. Naushad's music did wonders for the success of this film. Zindagi aaj bhee hai bekhudee aaj bhee hai Pyaar kehtee hain jise woh khushi aaj bhee hai Song : Dilrubaa maine tere pyaar mein kyaa kyaa na kiyaa Dil diyaa dard liyaa Movie : Dil Diyaa Dard Diyaa Cast : Dilip Kumar, Waheeda Rehman Singer : Md. Rafi MD : Naushad Lyricist : Shakeel Badayuni Ashok - One of the most boring songs ever. SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 10 10 14 14 4. One combination not regularly discussed on RMIM is that of Kishore Kumar and Madan Mohan. With Indeewar providing the lyrics, this sentimental song has great appeal. The movie (not in any other sense but just by its title) could be thought of as the opposite of the Bimal Roy classic "Do Beegha Zameen". Chaand sitaaron ka mela hai Yeh dil phir bhi akela hai Mehfil mein hai shehnai Phir bhi dil mein hai tanhai Hai saanson mein jaise koi toofan Song : Har koi chaahtaa hai ek mutthi aasmaan Har koi dhoondhtaa hai ek mutthi aasmaan Movie : Ek Mutthi Aasmaan Cast : Singer : Kishore Kumar MD : Madan Mohan Lyricist : Indeewar Balaji and Malini - Couple of other examples of this combo are Chacha Zindabad and Manmauji. There have been quite a few South Indian actresses, Vyjayanthimala Bali, Padmini, Hema Malini, Rekha and Sridevi, to name a few, who have made it big in Hindi films. Inexplicably, male stars from the south have never been able to strike it rich in Hindi. This brilliant actor burst into Bollywood with this mega- success in the early 80's, but was never really a force after that. Made by Balachander, the successful Tamil film director, this movie was a remake of a Telugu film starring Saritha and the same actor. I don't know what you say I don't know what you say But I want to dance and play I want to play the game of love I want you in the name of love Song : Hum bane tum bane ek duje ke liye Movie : Ek Duje Ke Liye Cast : Kamal Haasan, Rati Agnihotri Singer : Lata Mangeshkar and S.P.Balasubramaniam MD : Laxmikant - Pyarelal Lyricist : Balaji and Malini - True. Gemini Ganesan suffered the same fate after Miss Mary (again a remake). Hosts - Even a star like 'Sivaji' Ganesan was no exception. We believe that even he has acted in a couple of remakes in the 50's. Top male stars from the South, Rajnikanth, Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna., Venkatesh, Vishnuvardhan, and Mammootty, to name a few, have met with little success in Bollywod. Rajni, Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh, and Nagarjuna have done a little better than the others, but then, even that is limited. Not much is known about music director Snehal Bhatkar, but this song will always remain etched in the memories of Hindi music buffs. An excellent rendering by Mubarak Begum has ensured that this song will definitely be remembered, especially by the purist who finds himself lonely and isolated amongst the lovers of today's fast paced and synthesized music. Yeh bijli raakh kar jaayegi tere pyaar ki duniyaa Yeh bijli raakh kar jaayegi tere pyaar ki duniyaa Na phir tu jee sakegaa aur na tujhko maut aayegi Song : Kabhee tanhaaiyon mein yoon hamaaree yaad aayegee Andhere chhaa rahe honge ke bijlee kaundh jaayegee Movie : Hamaaree Yaad Aayegi Cast : Tanuja Singer : Mubarak Begum MD : Snehal Bhatkar Lyricist : Kidar Sharma Balaji and Malini - Mubarak Begum's name is synonymous with this song. Vandana - Lovely song. Tanuja's debut movie, I think. She has that mischievous twinkle in her eye, which few other Hindi screen actresses have, and the cutest face. Highly underrated actress with respect to acting talents also. SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 13 13 16 16 7. It does not take much (unfortunately) to know the social and political mess that our country is in today. But here we have, not one, but two detectives, using the combined powers of their deductions to describe the social scene around them and to warn the common man. The music director himself has pitched in along with another eminent lyricist to pen the lyrics to this song. (One of the two singers) - Jab dekho hadtaalein hain Jaane kis kee chaalein hain Samjhaute kaa naam naheen Agni mein ghee daalein hain Song : Do Jaasoos kare mehsoos ke dumiyaa badee kharaab hai Movie : Do Jasoos Cast : Raj Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar Singer : Md. It's Shankar-Jaikishen again, this time directing the man, who could probably be confused with Hemant Kumar, by an average listener. The bird of hope flies into the future with great optimism and confidence. Kabhi manzil bhi mil jaayegi Abhi to har aas baaki hai Umeendon par naubahaaron kaa Jahaan tak yeh saans baaki hai Song : Dil meraa ek aas kaa panchhi Udtaa hai oonche gagan par Movie : Aas Kaa Panchhi Cast : Rajendra Kumar Singer : Subir Sen MD : Shanker - Jaikishen Lyricist : Hasrat Jaipuri Ashok - Good choice, for the interesting singer. I think SJ deserve credit for introducing him. He deserved to have had a larger repertoire. Hosts - WOW !!!! That was unexpected, Ashok. Accolades for SJ from you - now that should be recorded for posterity ;-) Balaji and Malini - The "bird of hope" gave it away.........;-) While there are many occassions where two voices are used for an artiste in a single movie, this is one occasion where the MD has chosen to use three voices for Rajendra Kumar (Rafi, Mukesh, and Subir Sen). Two other examples readily come to mind - Taxi Driver - Dev Anand (Talat, Kishore, Jagmohan Bakshi) Shirin Farhad - Pradeep Kumar (Talat, Rafi, Hemant kumar) SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 8 8 13 13 9. It is possible that many of you may have heard this song on the many "farmaaishee" programs on Vividh Bharati, Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation, and other stations of All India Radio. It's the much maligned duo of Laxmikant and Pyarelal wielding the baton this time. Penned by the joyous lyricist, this song is a must-get for Kishore fans. Main pehene firtaa hoon jo Woh zanzeeerain kaise bantee hain Yeh bhed bataa doon geeton mein Tasveerain kaise bantee hain Song : Aap ke anurodh pe main ye geet sunaataa hoon, main ye geet sunaataa hon Apne dil kee baaton se main aap kaa dil behlaataa hoon Movie : Anurodh Cast : Rajesh Khanna, Simple Kapadia Singer : Kishore Kumar MD : Laxmikant - Pyarelal Lyricist : Anand Bakshi Hosts - We expected more RJGKers to come up with the correct answer. Apparently, not a very popular song ;-( We do remember this song hitting the top when the movie was released. SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 9 8 13 12 10. A myth perpetuated by many poets is the story of how a drop of rain falls in an oyster and gets transformed into a beautiful pearl. So much for science and reasoning. But then, take away his power of imagination, and the poet is left rudderless. This Asha Bhonsle and Manna Dey duet in a V.Shantaram movie, with the more popular Mukesh song about the Cosmic Painter, describes the journey of the raindrop from the cloud to the oyster and its conversion into a pearl. Boond gagan ki baathee thhee Kab se man mein udaasee thhee Piyaa se mil gayi mil ke khil gayee Preet kee pyaasee thhee Song : Boond jo ban gayee moti Movie : Boond Jo Ban Gayee Moti Cast : Jeetendra, ? Singers : Asha Bhosle and Manna Dey MD : Satish Bhatia Lyricist : Bharat Vyas Balaji and Malini - (rain falls in an oyster and gets transformed into a beautiful pearl) - Did you need the rest of the clue ;-) Hosts - Apparently even this was not sufficient,as some RJGKers came up with the "Yeh Kaun Chitrakaar hai" song, despite the fact that it is not the title song of the movie. The hint about the "Cosmic Painter" song was to help RJGKers close in on the name of the movie. But looks like it did not happen ;-( SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 12 11 14 13 11. This lovely Mukesh and Lata duet is an eternal favorite with Indian film music aficionados. Starring "Mr.Bharat" and two heroines (the comeback attempt of one of these heroines ended unsuccessfully a few years back), the movie is the usual Bollywood masalaa love triangle. Mukesh - Tumhare khwaab se dilkash Nazaaraa aur kyaa hoga Ke tum mere sahaare ho Sahaara aur kyaa hogaa Song : Bol meri taqdeer mein kyaa hai Mere humsafar ab to bataa Jeevan ke do pehloo hain Hariyaalee aur raastaa Movie : Hariyaalee Aur Raastaa Cast : Manoj Kumar, Mala Sinha Singer : Mukesh and Lata Mangshkar MD : Shankar - Jaikishen Lyricist : Shailendra Renu and Neeraj Deshmukh - This one has us stumped. "PKS" matches the cast (Waheeda and Mumtaz) and the clue regarding unsucessful comeback (Mumtaz). The title song "Pathhar Ke Sanam" is a Rafi solo though. Then there is "Shor" with Jaya and Nanda. Comeback attempt? We don't know. This song "Ek pyaar kaa naghma hai" is a Mukesh Lata duet, but not a title song. So what are we missing here? Surendra Rajak - Why would *macho* Indian men call Mala Sinha a sahaaraa? Ashok - The film has another slightly 'imperfect' title song, by Lata, 'Yeh Hariyaali Aur Yeh Raastaa'. Hosts - This song apparently caused a lot of confusion amongst RJGKers. If there was any mistake in the clue, it was also not pointed out by the people who got the answer correctly. Our understanding (and please do correct us if we are wrong) is that Hariyaali Aur Raastaa had Manoj Kumar, Mala Sinha, and Mumtaz. We could not get hold of a video cassette of this movie to confirm this for you. The big question is - Was Mumtaz in the movie? If yes, then the comeback attempt clue was with respect to her. If not, please do excuse us for the mistake. On the other hand, RJGKers could have considerd Mala Sinha's comeback attempt sometime back (not as a heroine, but in a character role - wasn't the movie "Khel", the Anil Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Anupam Kher starrer ?!?!? Not a successful attempt, given the height of popularity that Mala Sinha had scaled in her salad days ;-) Also, some entries got the "imperfect" title song (the one pointed out by Ashok). At least we do remember mentioning right at the beginning of the quiz that we have not included any such "imperfect" title songs. The name Rahul Deb-Burman (I read somewhere that it is indeed Deb-Burman not Dev Burman) evokes images of Jalal Agha gyrating to the tune of Mehboobaa Mehboobaa in Sholay. But the loRD has shown that he is capable of much more and much better. This sad Lata song describing the travails of a single woman, is a classic example of like father like son. Aakaash se giri main ek baar kat ke aise Duniyaa ne phir naa poocho Lootaa hai mujhko kaise Song : Naa koi umang hai naa koi tarang hai Meri zindagee hai kyaa ik katee patang hai Movie : Katee Patang Cast : Rajesh Khanna, Asha Parekh Singer : Lata Mangeshkar MD : R.D.Burman Lyricist : Anand Bakhshi Ashok - Is it really "much better" than Mehbooba Mehbooba? That one is interesting and creative, while this one is only a somewhat better than ordinary Lata solo; the antaras are well tuned but the mukhada sets my teeth on edge. His contribution to Indian film music beggars description. Here he is directing Lata in a very light-hearted movie made by another gentleman ("Bhodrolok" - as our friends from Bengal would say) from Bengal. Adding to the Bengali connections in this movie are two actresses who made it big in Hindi cinema. Paagal pawan se kaise koi bole Gori ke mukh se ghoonghtaa na khole Dole haule se man kee naiyyaa Song : Chupke chupke chal ree purwaiyyaa Movie : Chupke Chupke Cast : Dharmendra, Sharmila Tagore, Amitabh Bachhan, Jaya Bhaduri Singer : Lata Mangeshkar MD : S.D.Burman Lyricist : Anand Bakhshi Vandana - I am never able to comprehend why people say Dharmendra isn't much of an actor. It is probably more difficult to do comedy roles and he was funny-to-the-bone in this movie. Hosts - One of the neatest movies to have come out of Bollywood. The simple storyline and effortless acting (or should we say lack of "acting") made this a very popular entertainer. SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 8 8 17 17 15. One of the most beautiful actresses to grace Indian cinema, Vyjayanthimala Bali left an indelible impression on the minds of moviegoers. M.G.Hashmat is another lyricist about whom not much is heard from nettors on RMIM. Here he writes for a man whose life is in a big mess. The hero does not know how to clear away the troubles and sorrows of his life, caused by the betrayal of a loved one. A neat tune from another much maligned MD duo. Pyaar ke vaaday ho gaye jhoote Wafaa ke bandhan toote wafaa ke bandhan toote Ban ke jeevan saathi koi Chain meraa kyoon loote chain mera kyoon loote Song : Apne jeevan kee uljhan ko kaise main suljhaaoon Apnon ne jo dard diye hain kaise main batlaaon Movie : Uljhan Cast : Singer : Kishore Kumar MD : Kalyanji - Anandji Lyricist : M.G.Hashmat Ashok - Clever choice. Once I saw Hashmat and glanced at the lyrics, I didn't dwell on it; said 'Kora Kagaz' and went on. Luckily I returned to it for a second look! Far inferior to 'Kora Kagaz' title song, though. BTW, isn't it a KK/Lata tandem? Hosts - Inferior ? We beg to disagree, sir. The Kora Kaagaz song is great too, no denying that. But this is excellent too, in our opinion. Renu and Neeraj Deshmukh - Great song. Not very popular, for some inexplicable reason. Neeraj Malhotra - For the same trio - M.G.Hashmat/K.A./KK and a TITLE song 'mera jeewan kora kaagaz, kora hi reh gaya' wold have been my pick. Vish Krishnan - Hashmat did a bit of work with KA in the 70's. 2 movies I remember (and I don't have either soundtrack) are - Kora Kaagaz and Uljhan. The first one can be ruled out because the meter of the verse above simply does not fit. So I am going to guess this one....I am sure a Lata version also exists (Kalyanji Anandji get the prize for composing the maximum # of dual-version songs) Hosts - The great master guessing? What should we make of this? At least we succeeded in keeping the master guessing for sometime. Ashok, with Vish having echoed the same, this must be a tandem song. We have heard only the KK version, though. Apparently, the Kora Kaagaz versus Uljhan confusion did get the better of some other RMIMers. Manna Dey's voice holds its own charm for lovers of Hindi film music. The general impression that one gets about Manna Dey is that his voice was suited only for songs with strong classical bindings. There could be nothing further from the truth. Gifted with an excellent range in his voice, Manna Dey has sung a wide variety of songs. Here we present Anand Bakshi's words set to tune by Laxmikant - Pyarelal, which mirrors this sentiment. The "Gregory Peck of Indian cinema", he has given innumerable hits with almost all the top heroines of his times. Even now he refuses to shut shop and always seems to have an unending source of energy, which makes him the envy of many. The 80s saw a general decline in the popularity of his films, some of which were downright awful. This is just one more in the list of his poorly made films. It starred the heroine, who in real life, found her way into the heart and home of a mega- industrialist. But no denying that the guy has also lost the charisma now !!!! Balaji and Malini - For the life of us we cannot remember this song (by KK). After a reference to his work in the 80's, you picked a movie from the late 70's. No biggie, but again, I thought this was among his better movies at that stage in his career, and for what it is worth, among the best soundtracks provided by Rajesh Roshan. Pavan and Ravindra - Not Padmini, but Tina Munim who married some Kenyan industrialist. Hosts - We did not mention Padmini anywhere in the clue. As for Tina Munim, did she not marry Anil Ambani (of the Reliance Industries Group) - not some Kenyan industrialist ;-) Manjeet and Manjeet - I know you are talking of Dev and Tina, but the song is eluding me !! Anup - Maybe I am guessing the wrong song because Des Pardes, even though not a great movie, wasn't a poorly made movie. OK, maybe it was poorly made if you look at his previous movies, but looks so good if you watch his other movies like "Sau Crore" and "Awwal Number" ;-) SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 10 9 15 12 21. Naushad Ali, the doyen of Hindi film music, and Shakeel Badayuni have given many hit songs together. This film is just one more in the series of films which saw the partnership of the two. We, the compilers of this quiz, have not seen the movie, but the song sounds like one sung by a father bidding farewell to the bridal procession of his loving daughter. Aashiaan meraa jalaa aur main dekhtaa rahaa Us kee yaad ke sivaa mere paas kyaa rahaa Kyaa rahaa Deke mujhko ranj-o-gham har khushi chalee gayee Song : Mere ghar se pyaar kee palki chalee gayee Ghar meraa ujad gayaa zindagee chalee gayee Movie : Palki Cast : Rajendra Kumar, Waheeda Rehman Singer : Manna Dey MD : Naushad Lyricist : Shakeel Badayuni Ashok - This song won't enhance the reputation of Naushad or Manna Dey. Why two duds from Naushad? 'Babul', 'Saathi', or even 'Saaz Aur Aawaaz' would be better. (I suppose the last isn't a perfect title song.) Hosts - Let us not get into the relative merits of the songs in question. Each has its own charm for its lovers, and we just included one of the songs - no particular reason for the same. Ravi Narayanan - PASS, PASS, PASS !! Or rather - FAIL, FAIL, FAIL Hosts - Nahin saahab - yahaan koi fail nahin, yahaan to sab pass hain ;-) Surendra - Sounds like his beloved got married to somebody else SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 6 5 12 8 22. One of the few successful female music directors of Bollywood, Usha Khanna started her career with the intention of becoming a singer. Though she has never reached the dizzy heights of her contemporaries, she did carve a niche for herself. Here she directs Mukesh to the words of Prem Dhawan. Aaj puranee zanjeeron ko toD chuke hain Kyaa dekhein us manzil ko jo chhod chuke hain Chaand ke dar pe jaa pahunchaa hai aaj zamaanaa Naye jagat se hum bhee naataa jod chuke hain Song : ChhoDo kal kee baatein kal kee baat puraanee Naye daur pe likhenge mil kar nayee kahaanee Hum Hindustaanee, Hum Hindustaanee Movie : Hum Hindustaanee Cast : Sunil Dutt, Joy Mukherjee, Asha Parekh, Helen Singer : Mukesh MD : Usha Khanna Lyricist : Prem Dhawan Ashok - Don't like this particular song, but the film has one great Lata solo : "Maajhi meri kismet ki jee chaahe jahaa.n le chal" Abetter title song from the MD is from 'Aao Pyaar Kare', an under-appreciated soundtrack in general : or 'Dil Deke Dekho' SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 12 12 15 15 23. The welter of emotions in the heart of a young woman , awaiting her beloved one to come and make her his own, are well expressed in this song. The inimitable Asha Bhosle has done great justice to the lyrics of Shailendra and the music of, who else, but Shankar Jaikishen. Chhoote maataa pitaa chhootaa who baalaapan Kheli main jiske sang poore solah saawan De ke tan aur man de ke tan aur man Main manaaoon sajan Teri baahon mein ho meraa jeevan maran Song : Dhaanee chunaree pehan saj ke ban ke dulhan Movie : Hare Kaanch Kee Choodiyaan Cast : Biswajeet, Naina Sahu Singer : Asha Bhosle MD : Shankar - Jaikishen Lyricist : Shailendra Ashok - Very good choice. One of the best songs of the 60s period (i.e. without adding riders like 'coming from S-J' etc. !). Some other S-J choices in the quiz aren't this felicitous ! SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 6 6 10 10 24. This simple and sweet film from Rajshri Productions was a big hit, catapulting the lead pair to great fame. It is one of the mysteries of Bollywood of how a singer who could give such a huge hit song, never really made it. Ravindra Jain, the man known to have given good breaks to many aspiring singers, has written and composed this tune. Khulaa khulaa gagan yeh hari bhari dhartee Jitnaa bhi dekhoon tabeeyat naheen bhartee Sundar se sundar har ik rachnaa Phool kahe kaanton se bhi seekho hansnaa Song : Geet gaataa chal o saathee gungunaataa chal Movie : Geet Gaataa Chal Cast : Sachin, Sarika Singer : Jaspal Singh MD : Ravindra Jain Lyricist : Ravindra Jain Anup - It's mysterious to me too ;-) Jaspal Singh has "khulaa huaa galaa" and a very sweet voice. Some of his hits include, my favorite "Jab Jab Tu Mere Saamne Aaye" from "Shyaam Tere Kitne Naam" and his other Rajshri hit title songs in "Nadiyaa Ke Paar" (remade with changes as HAHK - IMO better than HAHK) and "Tulsi". I think he also sang in other Rajshri movies "Paheli". Hosts - You could include "Saawan Ko Aane Do" in this list too. BTW, the title song of SKAD is also sung by Jaspal Singh ("Tumhe geeton mein dhaaloongaa, Saawan Ko Aane Do"). Wasn't the song "Jhoom baraabar jhoom sharaabee" (movie ????) also sung by Jaspal Singh, or was it Narendra Chanchal ? SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 13 12 15 15 25. The lovers here are celebrating the arrival of the period that they had been waiting for a lifetime. Rafi and Asha Bhonsle convey the happiness of the lovebirds in an elegant manner. Geetkaat : Hasrat Jaipuri, Sangeetkaar : Shankar - Jaikishen. This song was briefly brought up in the discussion on RMIM about grammatical errors made by lyricists in Hindi films, though, very frankly, we could not find anything wrong with the syntax and the semantics of the song. Rafi - Janam janam se andheraa thhaa meri raahon mein Yeh baat kab thhee bhalaa mad bharee fizaaon mein Sabaa bahaar ke dole mein tumko layee hai Ke aaj hai saaree khudaaee meri baahon mein Song : Yehi hai woh saanjh aur savera (2) Jiske liye tarse hum saaraa jeevan bhar Yehi hai who saanjh aur saveraa Movie : Saanjh Aur Saveraa Cast : Singer : Asha Bhonsle, Md. Rafi MD : Shankar - Jaikishen Lyricist : Hasrat Jaipuri Ashok - "Saaraa jeevan bhar" would be like "all lifelong" I suppose. Hosts - True. But then have we not condoned a lot, on account of "poetic license"? SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 5 5 10 6 26. Meena Kumari - the tragedy queen of Hindi cinema. How well she had come to portray the pains and the helplessness of a woman who has lost her lover to the other woman. She was matched, probably only by the south Indian actress, Savitri, in her theatrics. If Dil Ek Mandir saw her being forced into marriage with Raaj Kumar, abandoning her love Rajendra Kumar, this movie had her losing Raaj Kumar to the siren of the 50s and the 60s (only to have him come back to her in the end). Hai dard aisaa ke sehnaa hai mushkil Duniyaawaalon se kehnaa hai mushkil Ghir ke aayaa hai toofaan aisaa Bachh ke saahil pe rehnaa hai mushkil Song : Dil apnaa aur preet paraayee Kisne hai yeh reet banaayee Movie : Dil Apnaa Aur Preet Paraayee Cast : Raj Kumar, Meena Kumari, Nadira Singer : Lata Mangeshkar MD : Shankar - Jaikishen Lyricist : Shailendra Ashok - Isn't there a newer film by the same name, with Usha Khanna as MD? The first Jumping Jack of Bollywood., Shammi Kapoor, had fans screaming "Yaahoo" all over the country . Junglee, Kashmir Ki Kali, Rajkumar, Teesri Manzil - name it and he churned out hits galore, winning the heroines over with multiple antics. Just one more in this list of Shammi hits, this movie had the music of Shankar -Jaikishen to the lyrics of the poet from the capital of Rajasthan. Mehfil mehfil dhoom machaaoon Paagal ban kar naach dikhaaoon Jaan-e-tamannaa saath hai mere Jaan-e-tamannaa saath hai mere Haal na poochho meri khushee kaa Song : Aashiq hoon ik mehjabeen kaa log kahen mujhe paglaa kahin kaa Movie : Paglaa Kahin kaa Cast : Shammi Kapoor, Asha Parekh Singer : Md. SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 9 6 10 7 28. Changing gears, let us go to a much more sober song. Here, Rajinder Kishen warns us about the difficulties on the path of love. This path is strewn with problems all the way and the traveler has to tread very carefully. Asha Bhonsle displays her multiple capabilities in this soft Ravi number. Yeh hai aansooon kee duniyaa Naakaamiyon ki mehfil Yeh hai who safar ki jiskee Dekhi na koi manzil Dekhi na koi manzil Song : Yeh raaste hain pyaar ke chalnaa sambhal sambhal ke Movie : Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke Cast : Singer : Asha Bhosle MD : Ravi Lyricist : Rajinder Kishen Ashok - Nice song. Ravi's Asha songs generally bore me. This one is an exception. Pintu Diwana - BTW, I think the movie is "Raaste Pyaar Ke", so the "hain" is extra in the song ;-) Hosts - Nahin saahab, the movie is "Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke" ;-) Surendra - The clue says "Mohabbat ki raahon mein chalnaa sambhal ke, Yahaan jo bhee aayaa gayaa haath mal ke", but then it is not Ravi. Hosts - Well, here is one case where the lyrical subclue was really important - the textual subclue was just an addendum. ;- ) SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 5 4 7 7 29. Fans of C.Ramchandra would kill us if there was no song of their favorite MD in this quiz. This sweet Lata Mangeshkar - Talat Mehmood duet has been written by the Light of the City of Nawaabs, the city which was the haven of Urdu literature. A song of the advent of the twinkling harbinger of hope in the early morning firmament. Murjhaayee kali kyaa phir se khilegi Khoi hui kyaa raahat milegi Kaheen yeh taaraa toot na jaaye Subah ka saathee chhoot na jaaye Song : Gayaa andheraa huaa ujaalaa, chamkaa chamkaa subah kaa taaraa Movie : Subah Kaa Taaraa Cast : Singers : Talat Mehmood, Lata Mangeshkar MD : C. Ramchandra Lyricist : Noor Lukhnawi Ashok - You are talking like an employer faced with an affirmative action demand for hiring an untalented minority candidate ;-) be done with it, by including it, which every one knows is unworthy, so that you can peacefully go on to hire really worthy ones (like Paglaa Kahin Kaa !). I am only reacting to the write-up. You *have* chosen a great title song for CR and I can suggest only one more as a compelling one : 'Sargam' (unfortunately, 'Shin Shinaaki Boobla Boo" isn't available !). 'Paigham' is better than Manna Dey songs you have chosen, but by itself it is an ordinary song. 'Navrang' would have been interesting like 'Khamoshi' (with the title appearing in the middle). The MD to whom you have done deep injustice, is OPN. 'Phir Wohi Dil Laayaa Hoon' 'Tumsa Nahin Dekha' 'Bahaarein Phir Bhi Aayengi' are all leagues better than some of the S-J and L-P stuff here. I know only a few are pure trash and others are somewhat better. But the point is that great music got suffocated, not by pure trash like 'Paglaa Kahin Kaa', but by such mediocre stuff as 'Dil Apnaa Aur Preet Parayii', 'Hariyaali Aur Raasta'. A series of such choices, often by people who should know better, have led our music to where it is today. On the positive side, I commend your highlighting the work of neglected MDs like Snehal Bhatkar, Satish Bhatia, and Sonik Omi. Hosts - We do realize that we missed out OPN and that could have been avoided. The same can be said of the great master Salil Chaudhry. But then this quiz was compiled at a very short notice and the error is regretted. But sir, with all due respect to connoisseurs of Hindi film music, one man exhales could be the life-giving breath for another man;-) Balaji and Malini - One of our favorites SOLO(15) TEAMSTERS (17) ATTEMPTS CORRECT ATTEMPTS CORRECT 5 5 12 10 30. Sometime back here was a posting on RMIM with the author's opinion that Madan Mohan did not have any gems sung by Rafi. With arguments coming from opponents and supporters of this viewpoint, we are inclined to include a Rajinder Kishen song of this duo which, though not a hugely popular number, is definitely a beautiful piece. Our cassette says that this is the sad version of the song, but we have not heard the happy version of this song. Anyway, here goes - Dosheezaa alhad naadan (could some Urdu expert kindly explain the dosheezaa???) Husn se hai apnee anjaan Pyaar ki naa jaane pehchaan Dil hee mein dil ke armaaan Song : Lo ek kalee muskaayee Movie : Ek Kalee Muskaayee Cast : Dharmendra Singer : Md. Rafi MD : Madan Mohan Lyricist : Rajinder Kishen Ashok - I had forgotten about the sad version. I think the happy version had far more radio play. (Which is the recording you have?) Hosts - We have the sad version, in the 2nd cassette of HMV 2-cassette album - All Time Greats - Md. Rafi Sings for Madan Mohan. BTW, we are still awaiting the explanation of "Do sheezaa" from Urdu experts on the net. Sami, Ikram, Ravindra, Ramesh 'Astable' Hariharan, anybody ???? The song talks of the happiness in the heart of the lover when his beloved lady comes. He says that with her coming, flowers have bloomed everywhere, and it looks like spring is in the air. Aap kaa hee thhaa sabko intezaar Aap kaa hee thhaa sabko intezaar Aap ke liye sab thhe bekaraar Hawaaein ghataaein fizaaein Song : Saare zamaane pe, mausam suhaane pe Veeraanee see thhee chhaayee Aap Aaye Bahaar Aayee Movie : Aap Aaye Bahaar Aayee Cast : Rajendra Kumar, Sadhana Singer : Md. But he does have a flair for comedy and there is ample display of this in this movie. As the henpecked husband of Anita Raj he had his fans in splits. The self-styled disco-king of Hindi film music has provided the music for the unknown lyricist. Kishore croons for the hero, but could somone throw some light on who this Nishi Kohli is, talking in between the singing? Biwi aisee kahaan doosree Waahun waahun waahun waahun waahun Karoon main saaree umar naukri Waahun waahun waahun waahun waahun Doonga main din rat salaamee Karoongaa main har waqt ghulaamee Song : Log mujhe kyoon dete hain taanaa Haan main hoon beebee kaa deewaanaa To kyaa....
