---------------------------------------------------------------------------- RJGK-32 Bikhre Moti Answers and Results Kalyan Kolachala ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: grebal1@umbc.edu (rebala gopinath) Newsgroups: rec.music.indian.misc Subject: RJGK 32 [ Answers ans Results ] Repost with additions Date: 7 Aug 1996 15:50:18 -0400 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, Here are the answers and results for RJGK 32 on "Bikhre moti". I am extremely sorry for the delay in posting the results. I was caught up in excessive workload and other problems. I was also waiting for entries from some people and Abhay, the next host, had mentioned that he would be taking a while. Despite all these excuses I still feel the delay is inexcusable and I feel I shouldn't have conducted the quiz with a release coming along. At least I should have intimated the delay so that the next quiz could have begun earlier. There are some additional comments that were left out earlier. For the quiz I'm thankful to Vish, NeerajM, Balaji and Malini for reviewing the quiz, to Satish and Saba for helping me with the articles on the composers included in the quiz and to all the participants for participating. Without any more delay we start with the participants. The participation was low but higher than I expected. Thanks to all the participants. I feel honoured by their entries. Nothing could have been more rewarding. There was a total of 23 entries and 31 participants. There were 3 non-competitive entries, not a very encouraging beginning for this idea. Snehal B. Oza Ramesh Hariharan Preeti Ranjan Panda Pavan Kumar Desikan and U.V. Ravindra Balaji Murthy and Malini K V N Gopal S Sreedhar Shalini Razdan Dr. Surjit Singh and Harmesh Kaur Vivek Khandelwal (NC) Vish Krishnan Neeraj Malhotra and Prince Kohli Syeda K. Fatima (NC) Suneeta Donepudi and Indira Kuruganti (Cats) Ashok Dhareshwar Preetham Gopalaswamy and Sami Mohammed Chetan Vinchhi (NC) Neeraj Deshmukh, Swapna Gokhale and Indrani Bose Abhay Avachat Vijay Kumar Harish Suvarna Vijay Sundararajan Neha Desai Now on to the quiz. I had attempted to make the quiz easier by including readily available songs. Most of the songs in the quiz are available in at least two cassettes. The quiz isn't really difficult for one who is into the music of the 40's and 50's. This can be seen in the scores. Here are some of the comments from the participants. Preeti: Nice quiz. One of the few rjgks in which I had most of the songs on tape. Clues were helpful enough that I didn't have to spend too much time searching. Shalini: Thanks for a very interesting as well as challenging quiz. Surjit and Harmesh: Your audio video cassette collection must be similar to ours, because we have almost all of the songs mentioned in the quiz. Neeraj Malhotra: Bahut frustrate kiyaa is baar aapne :) (kk) Objections to the "aap"! Cats: Looks like Suraiyya is an old favourite of yours. We will have to keep that in mind for your future quizes :) (kk) I hope as do most RMIMers that I don't get to conduct another long-delayed quiz. Ashok: A general comment about singers. I find Suraiya to be over- represented at the expense of other singers of the era, Shamshad and Rajkumari. (kk) Agreed I was guilty of that. Chetan: Thank your for having compiled the wonderful set of songs. Made me revisit some of my vintage collection ! Vijay: In keeping with the ageless "simplicity v complexity debate" quite often a list of forgotton melodies is a list of forgettable ones. This quiz was unique in that none of the songs are forgettable and I hope none are forgotten. For me it brought forth an imaginary journey into a glorious past period in Hindi film music, where lyrics were surprisingly simple and refreshing. Keep the good work up Kalyan. Also the non-competitive participants idea is a simple but brilliant one, it will directly result in more participation and appreciation for music of a bygone era. (kk) Thanks! I am flattered :) As for the NC idea it clearly didn't work :) Now on to the answers and comments. Thanks to Ashok all I had to do was cut and paste his entry. Most of the comments are also by Ashok. My comments begin with a and those of others with their name (for Snehal it's SNE). 1. ( Khila wo phool kisi ke kisi chaman me raho ) * 2 Jo dil ki raah se guzri hai wo bahaar ho tum We begin with this great ghazal by Suraiya for Ghulam Mohammed. Song: dhaDakate dil ki tamannaa ho mera pyar ho tum Film: Shama, '61 Music: Ghulam Mohammad Singer: Suraiya Lyrics: Kaifi Azmi Cast: Suraiya, Nimmi, Vijay Dutt 'Shama' is the last film Ghulam Mohammad actually worked on. Unlike his employer, Naushad, he had the touch when it came to composing Suraiya songs, second only to Anil Biswas. The song selected by Kalyan is perhaps the best of the three Suraiya songs in the film, but the ohter two are quite close: mast aankho.n me.n sharaarat, kabhi aisi to na thi and aap se pyar hua jaata hai, khel dushawaar hua jaata hai. However, the most impressive feature of GM's music in the film for me was the Suman Kalyanpur gems he composed. This was before her singing style got hammered down flat to be a pale shadow of Lata's. As I recall, there are three beautiful solos by Suman (perhaps picturized on Nimmi?): mere mehaboob tujhe pyaar karoo.n ya na karoo.n , dil Gam se jal raha hai jale, par dhuaa.N na ho and ik jurm karke ham ne, chaaha tha muskuraan The masterpiece of the film, however, is this slow-paced, majestic duet by Rafi and Suman: yaas ke dar pe jhuka jaata hai sar aaj ki raat (kk) Not to mention another Suraiya gem: "Aap se pyar hua jata hai" and a good Rafi solo: "Woh saadgi kahin ise" My favorite Ghulam Mohammed film and one of my all-time favorite films. SNE> Incidentally with the same name a film came in 1946 and in that one too; Suraiya has sung for a MD appearing in the quiz! The song is 'Ik Yaad Tunhaari Yaad Rahi' sung by G M Durrani and Shamshad Begum. Well, there is no contradition in above two statements as, this song was then rerecorded in Durrani-Suraya's voices! (kk) That might have led to the confusion for HMV and subsequently NeerajM. 2. Jab zulmon ka ho saamna Tab tu hi hamein thaamna Vo burayi kar Hum bhalai karen Nahin badle ki ho kammna The song is from a Shantaram film about prison reform that was hugely popular in India and abroad. Music is by Vasant Desai and lyrics by Bharat Vyas. This song has been heavily discussed in RMIM lately. Song: ai maalik tere bande ham Film: Do Ankhen Barah Hath, '57 Music: Vasant Desai Singer: Male chorus/Lata Lyrics: Bharat Vyas Cast: Shantaram, Sandhya, David 3. Hum aas lagaye baithe hain, tum vada karke bhool gaye One of Mukesh's earlist hits. Music by Anil Biswas. Song: dil jalataa hai to jalane de Film: Pehli Nazar, '45 Music: Anil Biswas Singer: Mukesh Lyrics: Dr. Safdar 'Aah' Sitapuri Cast: Motilal, Veena, Munawwar Sultana This is the first song sung by Mukesh as a playback artist. 4. God pe leke raat ki rani, roj sunaye apni kahani Cham cham karte aaye savera, phoolon ki de jaye nishani Shabnam aake mukhda choome rimjhim barse mast fuhaar aaja When Geeta and Asha are paired together, the result is magic. Brilliant music by a master composer. A Dilip Kumar-Madhubala starrer. Song: dharati se door gore baadalo.n ke chhao.n me.n Film: Sangdil, '52 Music: Sajjad Husain Singers: Asha, Geeta Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan Cast: Dilip, Madhubala, Protima Devi, Shammi, Leela Chitnis (kk) My all-time favorite song. 5. Dil walon ki duniya mein, hai rasm ki jab koi Aaye to kadam lena, jayen to dua dena One of Lata's earliest hits and one of the last for the MD, Khemchand Prakash. The film starred Madhubala. Song: mushkil hai bahut mushkil, chaahat ka bhula dena Film: Mahal, '49 Music: Khemchand Prakash Singer: Lata Lyrics: J. Nakshab Cast: Ashok Kumar, Madhubala, Vijayalakshmi 6. Dil ki hasrat aansuon me, (tukde hokar bah gayi) * 2 Meri ummeedon pe bijli, jab gira kar chal diye Hum tadapte rah gaye, woh muskrake chal diye And the mukhda follows thereafter. A vibrant song that describes how one is affected by love. A Sulochana Kadam song composed by Shyam Sunder in a film named after a musical instrument starring Sulochana Kadam and Manmohan Krishna. Song: chori chori aag si dil me lagaakar chal diye Film: Dholak, '51 Music: Shyam Sunder Singer: Sulochana Kadam Lyrics: Shyam Lal Shams Cast: ?Ajit, Meena Kumari, Sulochana Kadam, Manmohan Krishna 7. Saajan ki baat par, gussa jo aa gaya zulfon ka badal, galon pe cha gaya ho, galon pe cha gaya Abhi abhi din tha, abhi abhi raat hai A duet involving Lata in a Suraiya starrer describes love at first sight. Music by Husnlal-Bhagatram. Song: chup chup khaDe ho zaroor koi baat hai Film: Bade Bahen, '49 Music: Husnlal-Bhagartam Singers: Lata, Premlata Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan Cast: Rehman, Suraiya, Geeta Bali 8. Duniya mein mohabbat ki, (yahee reet hai aye dil) * 2 Jal jaana magar honthon pe fariyaad na laana A Surinder Kaur gem from one of Dilip Kumar's earliest hits. Music is by Master Ghulam Haider. Song: badnaam na ho jaae mohabbat ka fasaana Film: Shaheed, '48 Music: Gulam Haider Singer: Surinder Kaur Lyrics: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan Cast: Dilip, Kamini Kaushal SNE> Other nice song by Surendra Kaur was: 'Ujda Umidon Ka Chaman Hae Tum Kahan Aur Ham Kahan' 9. Nile gagan pe jhoomenge aaj badal ka pyaar dekhenge aaj This song is from a hit V. Shantaram film by the Vasant Desai - Hasrat combination. A Lata-Hemant duet. Song: nain so nain naahi milaao Film: Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje, '55 Music: Vasant Desai Signers:Hemant, Lata, and chorus Lyrics: Hasrat Cast: Gopi Krishan, Sandhya 10. Yahan hamaara Tajmahal hai aur Qutub Minara hai Yahan hamare mandir masjid \ Sikhon ka gurudwara hai This film is one of the biggest hits ever in Hindi cinema. A rare patriotic song in the pre-independence days, it was a huge sensation at that time. The music was composed by Anil Biswas. Song: aaj himala ki choTi se phir ham ne lalakaara hai door haTo ai duniyaawaalo.n hindustan hamaara hai Film: Kismat, '43 Music: Anil Biswas Singer: Ameer Karnataki and chorus Lyrics: Pradeep Cast: Ashok Kumar, Mumtaz Shanti, David NeerajM: ** Now this is one the first clue I recognized - aur gaaDi wahiin ruki hai ** 11. Jane kaise jadoo kiya, teri meri baat ne Tera mera pyaar hua, (pehli mulaqat me) * 2 A Suraiya solo for Husnlal-Bhagatram. The interludes in this song were used by the MD's assistants a year later in one of the songs of their super-hit film, "Barsaat". Song: tere naino.n ne chori kiya mera chhoTa sa jiya Film: Pyrar Ki Jeet, '48 Music: Husanlal-Bhagatram Singer: Suraiya Lyrics: Rajinder Krishan Cast: Rehman, Suraiya 12. Zindagi khatm bhi ho jaye agar, na kabhi khatm ho ulfa ka safar When one is in love, everything seems accessible - the moon, stars and beyond. A Rafi-Lata duet from a film with a number of Lata gems. The film took years to make and was released after the MD's death and starred Meena Kumari. Song: chalo dildaar chalo, chand ke paar chalo Film: Pakeezah, '71 Music: Ghulam Mohammad Singers:Lata, Rafi Lyrics: Kaif Bhopali Cast: Ashok Kumar, Meena Kumari, Raj Kumar, Veena A version of the song with only Lata's voice was recorded, but not used. A happy choice, as it turns out, because although Rafi only sings the pallavi line, the presence of his voice changes the chemistry of the song and makes it hugely appealing. The solo version is found in the 'Pakeeza Rangbirang' album, issued by HMV in '77; it consists of tracks, composed by GM, but not used in the film, some of them very good, e.g. "bandhan bandho" by Shobha Gurtu. SNE> There are so many GM films (that are now available) to chose from. Why did you come thus far to '70s ? You could have tried with Kundan (1956), Shisha('53) , Pardes (1950), Naaznin (1954), Grahasthi (1948), Shayar (1949), Sitara (1955), Paras (1950), Hansate Aanso (1950) and many others.... (kk) - To make the quiz easier. 13. Raat katati nahin, din guzarta nahin Zakhm aisa diya hai ki bharta nahin When all is lost, what's the use of life! A difficult song melodiusly sung by Talat. The film name could remind one of a famous Ghalib ghazal and a Khaiyyam film of the 80's. Music is by Ghulam Mohammed. Song: zindagi denevaale sun Film: Dil-E-Nadan, '53 Music: Ghulam Mohammad Singer: Talat Lyrics: Shakeel Cast: Talat, Shyama SNE> Good song; but my fav. of the film is 'Muhobat Ki Dhun Beqararon Se Puchho' (kk) There's also Jagjit Kaur's "Khamosh zindagi ko". There has also been discussion on how closely Jagjit Kaur resembles Suraiya in these songs. According to Vish (AFAIR) this is the only non-Khaiyyam Hindi film Jagjit Kaur sang in. 14. F: Achcha Mr. Pancham, aap ne kisi se mohabbat ki hai Saigal: Woh bole, woh bole! Woh bole mohabbat ki hai kabhi, woh bole Kya jaan kisi pe di hai kabhi Dil cheer ke hum dikhla na sake, dikhla na sake A Saigal song about lost love in a film about the "moth". The music is by Khemchand Prakash. The film has a number of hit songs by Saigal and Khursheed. Song: ham apanaa unhe banaa na sake Film: Bhanwra Music: Khemchand Prakash Singer: Saigal Lyrics: Kidar Sharma Cast: Saigal, Khurshid Preeti: I listened to ALL Saigal songs I have on tape over the weekend, but couldn't locate #14. All I could get from your clues was that, the movie might be "Patanga". Serves me right for not buying the complete Saigal collection :-) Please do indicate the source of your recordings of #14 and #30 when you post the solutions. (kk) This song is in a 4 cassette pack by HMV/Hindustan Record titled "Best of K.L. Saigal". I've also seen it in a Saigal CD. As for #30 it is in the HMV collection "Vintage favorites from films (32-42). 15. Sun sun murali ki dhun matwari, rah jaye Radha tori thaari ki thaari Laakh jatan karoon, laaj ki maari, paon chat par aaye na A great song by a highly underrated Meena Kapoor. The music is by her husband, Anil Biswas. Song: rasiya re, man basiya re, tere bina jiya mora lage na Film: Pardesi, '57 Music: Anil Biswas Singer: Meena Kapoor Lyrics: Prem Dhawan and Sardar Jafri Cast: Nargis, Oleg, Balraj Sahni, Padmini, Prithviraj Kapoor, Jairaj SNE> She may be (is) underrated on RMIM; but in her time she has sung with almost all the music directors. That includes besides Anil Biswas; Roshan, Khayyam (Sharmaji), Madan Mohan, Vinod, Pt. Shyamsundar, Aziz Hindi, Ram Prasad, Giridhar Sharma, Murari etc. Balaji> On the contrary I feel she is highly overrated! 16. Aankh micholi kheli jhoola jhoom ke jhoole Ban me chameli khili hum bahaar me bhoole Par deni thi jo saugat baki rah gayi One of the many Suraiya gems for Anil Biswas in a 1948 movie. Song: door paapihaa bola, raat adhi reh gai meri tumhari mulaaqaat baaqi reh gai Film: Gajre, '48 Music: Anil Biswaas Signer: Suraiya Lyrics: Gopal Singh Nepali Cast: Suraiya, Motilal SNE> The same movie has some excellent Lata solos that requires a mention: 'Baras (2) Badali Bhi Bhikhar Gayi Ab Kab Avoge Baalama' and 'Kab Tak Kategi Zindagi Kinaare Kinaare O Maazi Aake Naav Meri Leharon Me Le Jaare' and 'Gup-Chup Te~ra Mera Pyaar Duniya Kya Jane, Kya Jane Kya Jaanne Sansaar.. Gup-Chup Tera Mera Pyaar' Particularly the first solo (penned by Gopal Sing Nepali) is wonderful both by wordings and composition. Other Suraiya gems under Anil Biswas, are to be found in 1949 film Jeet and then in 1952 film Do Sitare; and of course 1954 Waris. 17. Zindagi yun bhi guzar hi jaati Kyon tera raah guzar yaad aaya Ghulam Mohammed has given music to some of the greatest ghazals in Hindi films. This song is a Ghalib ghazal brilliantly sung by his favourite male singer and the king of ghazals, Talat Mehmood. Song: phir mujhe deedaa-e-tar yaad aayaa Film: Mirza Ghalib, '53 Music: Ghulam Mohammad Singer: Talat Lyrics: Mirza Ghalib Cast: Bharat Bhushan, Suraiya, Sohrab Modi, Nigar SNE> The first film ever to have won President's Award; was produced by the Lion of Minerva (Movieton) - Sohraab Modi! 18. (Sakhiyan na maar mohe taane, jis ko na lagi woh kya jaane) * 2 ho ho ho ~ ~ ~ bhool jaungi, bhool jaungi ye thitholi koi mil gaya humjoli Kaise bachge rahogi, aahen bharke kahogi, mai to haar gayi, haar gayi, haar gayi The melody of Lata and the magic of Geeta Dutt combine to give a great duet. The song is from a Shantaram film starring Rajendra Kumar. Song: ankhiyaa.n bhool gayi hai.n sona Film: Goonj Uthi Shehnai, 59 Music: Vasant Desai Singers:Geeta, Lata, and chorus Lyrics: Bharat Vyas Cast: Rajendra Kumar, Ameeta, Anita Guha Interestingly, there is a Geeta-Lata bride-teasing chorus song, written by Bharat Vyas, compsed by Vasant Desai, from a V. Shantaram film, in which Rajendra Kumar acts! It is "meri pyari behanaa" from 'Toofan Aur Diya.' 19. Bhor bhayi par koyi na aaya, sooni sej basaane Taare doobe deepak bujh gaye, raat hue parwaane Prelude: Saanjh ki lali sulag sulag kar, ban gayi kali dhool aaye na balam bedardi, mai chunti rah gayi phool. A Lata gem for Anil Biswas. The lyrics are by Sahir. The song is from one of the rare films starring Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor. The song starts with the following lines: Song: intezaar aur abhi Film: Char Dil Char Rahen Music: Anil Biswas Singer: Lata Lyrics: Sahir Cast: Raj Kapoor, Meena Kumari, Ajit, Nimmi, Shammi Kapoor, Kumkum Many years ago, I was reading an article by a music reviewer/correspondent, who used the name 'Touchstone' [Hope it was someone different from Raju Bharatan. :)] He mentioned in passing that the finest ever by Lata was this song from the KA Abbas film. I hadn't heard the song when I read it and the allusion somehow stuck in my memory. I stalked Radio Srilanka for a long long period hoping to catch the song. It was years before I finally got to hear it and the wait was worth it. I think I kind of agree with the reviewer's evaluation. It is a raagamaala (Yaman, Bihag, and Bhairav, I am told), but approached as a fully fleshed out song. It is a mujraa song, but both lyrically and musically transcends the genre. The starting lines given by Kalyan are actually how the song starts in the HMV recording. In the film, it is the first stanza. The opening is: jab mai.n kehti hu.n ke ek roz huzoor aaenge to dil ye kehtaa hai ki ek din to zaroor aaenge intazaar aur abhi, aur abhi, aur abhi Cats: Clean bowled by this clue :-< kk: IMHO, a must-listen song, particularly for AB skeptics. Is Rizwan listening? :) 20. Ye kisne chupke-chupke mujhe bekarar kar diya Ye kisne chori-chori mere dil pe vaar kar diya Maje ki baat dekhiye (dil mera nishana hai) * 2 A "small narrative" from Lata and Rafi. Music is by Husnlal-Bhagatram. Song: chhoTa sa fasaana hai tere mere pyar ka Film: Birha Ki Raat, '50 Music: Husanlal-Bhagatram Singers:Lata, Rafi Lyrics: Sarshar Shailani Cast: Dev, Nargis 21. Tere mandir me dekh andhera rooth na jaya piya tera And by the end of the song all the lamps light up. A Saigal gem from a film about a musical genius. The film has a number of hits by Saigal and Khursheed. A film with similar plot and songs was made in the 50's with S.N. Tripathi as the composer. Song: din soonaa sooraj binaa, chand binaa rain ... jagamaga jagamaga diaa jalaao Film: Tansen, '43 Music: Khemchand Prakash Singer: Saigal Lyrics: Pandit Indra Cast: Saigal, Khurshid, Kamala Chatterjee 22. Gin gin lahre bitaye din rasiya, ( Jaise nadi bahe, vaise bahe akhiyan) * 2 Aas jo aaye toofan uthaye, Koyi aise jeene ko, kahan se jigar laye A rare Suraiya-Asha duet in a film starring Suraiya and Shammi Kapoor in his pre "Tumse nahin dekha" days. The music is by Husnlal-Bhagatram. The name of film can be obtained by combining the film name of clue #1 and and a synonym of clue #14. Song: mauj khaamosh hai behataa huaa dhaara hai .. jakey laage nainaa, o paae nahi.n chainaa nadiyaa kinaare ho guzaare din rainaa Film: Shama Parwana, '54 Music: Husanlal-Bhagatram Singers:Suriya, Asha, and chorus (There is a brief aalaap by a male voice; Rafi?) Lyrics: Majrooh Cast: Shammi Kapoor, Suraiya, Ulhas, Sundar NeerajM: A delightful song indeed ! (kk) This unexpectedly turned out to be the most difficult clue as this song is not in the "Shama Parwana" cassette. 23. Aandhi aayi kya ghabrana, tujhko desh piya ke jana Na dar in kanto se badhta chal, dekh ke badal nahin machal A word of caution by Amirbai Karnataki to a lover seeking his beloved. The music is by Shyam Sunder. Song: piyaa milan ko jaanewaale, samhal samhal kar chal Film: Dev Kanya, '46 Music: Shyam Sundar Singer: Ameer Karnataki Lyrics: Vali Sahab Cast: Leela Desai, Lila Chitnis, Ulhas 24. Kya lutf aa raha tha, dilbar ki dillagi se Nazren bichi mujhi par, parda bhi tha mujhi se O~~~ A~~~ Kya haseen tasveer thi allah kasam, aye sanam A hit qawalli by Rafi, Manna Dey and Sadat Khan. This song is from Suraiya's last film, a legendary tale of two brave warriors, father and son. Also the MD's last film. Song: phir tumhaari yaad aai ai sanam Film: Rustom Sohrab, '63 Music: Sajjad Husain Singers:Rafi, Manna Dey, Sadat Khan Lyrics: Qamar Jalalabadi Cast: Prithviraj Kapoor, Suraiya, Premnath, Mumtaz SNE> Surprised that you chose this one instead of excellent Suraiya number 'Ye Kaisi Ajab Daastan Ho Gay Hai' or Lata's fabulous 'Ai Dilruba' or Talat's evergreen 'Majandara' !! (kk) AFAIK this song is the most popular and readily available. And the quiz had to made easy :) 25. Bhara karte hain zakhmi dil, (aur ansoo bhi hai tham jaate) * 2 Banayi jisne duniya, yeh usiki meherbani hai A melodius Talat song suggesting an even-handed approach to happiness and grief. Brilliant lyrics by Qamar Jalalabadi set to music by Anil Biswas. Song: kabhi Gam hai kabhi khushiyaa.n, yahi to zindagaani hai Film: Waris, '54 Music: Anil Biswas Singer: Talat Lyrics: Qamar Jalalabadi Cast: Talat, Suraiya, Nadira 26. Karoge kabhi mere dil me ghar, bolo jadoogar Hum to kabhi ke hue tere dilbar, ab kahe ki fikar To phir aao ji, mera dil bada hai bekarar A Lata-Talat duet set to vibrant and catchy music by Vasant Desai. The name of the film suggests that the hero is a teacher. Song: o dildaar, bolo ek baar, kya mera pyar pasand hai tumhe Film: School Master, '59 Music: Vasand Desai Singers:Talat, Lata Lyrics: Pradeep? Cast: Predominantly South Indian: BR Panthulu, MV Rajamma, with a cameo appearance by Shivaji Ganesan. I know of three Talat-Lata duets composed by Vasant Desai. Two of them are quite ordinary: the one above and the one from 'Mausi' which goes "tim tim tim, taaro.n ke keep jale." For some reason, HMV repeatedly anthologizes these two, so far totally ignoring the superb one from 'Pyar Ki Pyas': "saawan ke jhoole paDe." The film was a huge hit in Kannada (and perhaps in other South Indian languages, as well). The music was by TG Lingappa, who was also an occasional singer. Vasant Desai's music for the Hindi re-make is independent, but nowhere near as good as the Kannada version. 27. Ulfat ki umangon ka, ( chota sa kafila ) * 2 Dhadkan ki raah chalke, ( is dil se jaa mila ) * 2 Phoolon ki jawaani ke ubharon se puchlo sharmaye agar phool to haaron se poochlo A Lata-Kishore Kumar duet from the early 50's. The name of the film is somewhere in the above extract. Song: leharo.n se poochh lo, ya kinaaro.n se poochh lo Film: Kafila, '52 Music: Husanlal-Bhagatram Singers:Kishore, Lata Lyrics: Vrajendra Gaur Cast: Ashok Kumar, Nalini Jaywant, Moti Lal, Ameeta Kalyan had at least 6 films featuring great Kishore Kumar songs to choose from in this RJGK: Ziddi, Rimjhim, Fareb, Paisa Hi Paisa, Kafila, and Rokhsana. Just one out of six would seem to be an under-representation. (kk) If it's any consolation for the Klan there aren't many Rafi songs either :) SNE> Excellent choice! Thanks. Just tell me where is this recording available ? (kk) The two cassette pack from HMV on Husnlal-Bhagatram. 28. Teri zulphon ki yeh rangat hai, ( jo badal ban ke chaayi hai ) * 2 Teri aankhon ki ye masti hai, jo saawan banke aayi hai When love has blossomed, its spring for the lovers. A Rafi-Lata duet with music by Ghulam Mohammed and lyrics by Shakeel. Song: ham tum ye bahaar, dekho rang laaya pyar, barsaat ke maheene me.n Film: Ambar, '52 Music: Ghulam Mohammad Singers:Lata, Rafi Lyrics: Shakeel Cast: Raj Kapoor, Nargis, Baby Tanuja SNE> I like all Rafi-Lata duet of this film. But the first choice of mine is Lata's 'Tutegi Na Pyaar Ki Dor' and 'Hum Pyaar Tumhi Se'. Other Rafi duets are: 'Shama Jali Parwaana Aya (2) Shama Jai' and 'Duniya Me Nahi Koi Yaar Wafaadar Zamana Sach Kehata Hia' (Excellent song) 29. Jalwe tere nazar main hon, dil me ho teri aarzoo Mujhko yehi ho justaju, ki lab pe mere, ho tu A Suraiya-Surendra duet. The film name could remind one of the first war of Indian independence. Song: teri nazar me.n mai.n rahu.n, meri nazar me.n tu Film: 1857 Music: Sajjad Husain Singers:Suraiya, Surendra Lyrics: Shewan Rizvi Cast: Suraiya, Suresh, Nigar Other notable song of the film were: 'Rulaega Kab Tak Gam-E-Ashiyan' by Suraiya and 'Wo Pehali Mulakat (2), Pyar Ban Gayi' by Surendra 30. Dil dhoond raha hai ki mera chand kahan hai Choti si jhalak deke mera id bana ja Taaren hai mere zakhme jigar isme sama jaa This song is from Noorjehan's first Hindi film in a lead role and a big hit. There have been at least two more films of the same name, with music by Ravi and Khaiyyam. Song: tu kaun si badali me mere chand hai aa jaa Film: Khandan, 42 Music: Ghulam Haider Singer: Noor Jehan Lyrics: ? Cast: Noor Jehan, Ghulam Mohammed Other Khandan songs of Nurjahan were: Mere Liye Jahan Me Chain Na Karaar Hai and Ham Khelenge (2), Ham Ankh Michauli Khelenge Tie Breakers ************ 31. Khel khel tha ajab anokha, deta man apne ko dhokha Haar jeet kya jaani jisne, khel prem ka kabhi na khela A gem by a great singer of the 40's, Arun Kumar. The music is by Anil Biswas. Song: sanjh ki bela, panchhi akela Film: Jwar Bhata, '44 Music: Anil Biswas Singer: Arun Kumar Lyrics: Pandit Narendra Sharma Cast: Mridula, Shamim, Dilip, Agha It is Dilip's debut film. SNE> The first film of Yusuf Khan (Dilip Kumaar). Interestingly his second film, Milan (1946) had also had music of Anil Biswas (my fav.). It has one good song 'Upar Hai Baadari Kari Maujo Me Hai Naav Hamaari Beda Kaise Paar Ho' sung by Shankar Das Gupta (or Anil Da ?). 32. Chup chap sahe jaati hoon main dard ki choten, hai dard ki choten Le deke liye jaati hoon main naam tumhara One of the many Noorjehan hits from this Shyam Sunder film. Song: baiThi hu.n teri yaad ka lekar ke sahaara Film: Village Girl (also known as 'Gaao.n Ki Gori'), '43 Music: Shyam Sundar Singer: Noor Jehan Lyrics: Vali Sahab Cast: Noor Jehan, Nazir, Prem Adib, Durga Khote 33.
