Those who didn't, I'm sure you meant to, but events overtook you. Never mind. All is forgiven in the merriment that unites all of us after strenuous RJGKs. In all, RJGK-37 had 40 entries, many insightful comments and a heavy dosage of brickbats. However, all that anon. First, a brief summary of results for those whom the madding lack of time suffocates. Winners ------- My choice of winners is based on a simple strategy. The singers who scored the maximum number of points won. In other words, the winning singers had the maximum number of participants identifying their songs. I think that achievement is worth a place in the medals tally. Bouquets -------- "I liked the format quite a bit. Great for a change!" - Prince "...um... interesting quiz." - Chetan "You should be commended for making a genuine effort for making the quiz simple and easy." - Anup "I liked your idea of match-the-pair (the technique of 'proving by elimination' was very helpful !!)" - Rajesh "Choices gave me incentive to participate in my first RJGK." - Anju "[...] wonderful concept of saving time by "matching the columns" [...] makes much more sense to identify the song with the singer. [...] The goal was surely achieved as I did have fun humming and grimacing at some of the songs." - Hema "[...] you do seem to have your finger on what can be generally accepted as among the most popular for each of these singers [...]" - Balaji "The selection of songs was perfect in most cases [...] and the quiz featured a fair number of singers who otherwise would hardly see the light of the day on RMIM." - Neeraj "I am glad you used the one-singer-one-song principle; it allowed s stunning array of singers to be highlighted." - Ashok "Nice complement to Neeraj M.'s Guldasta. Between the two quizzes, RJGK has given a good representative sample of the wealth of singers in film music." - Surajit "[...] the hints given along with the questions are superbly written; describing the singer to perfection." - Hozefa "Nice down to the earth quiz. Very compact and precise." - Ambrish Many and varied were the bouquets to grace this RJGK, from the simple and straightforward "fun and easy" to the circumspect and left-handed "funny, umm... different, good _quiz_ not good _RJGK_". If you found this quiz easy and light as many did, then the aim of the quiz was achieved. RJGK-37 received compliments about the good spread on the number of singers (entirely unsurprising considering the theme), on the general choice of songs and the novel format. Expectedly, the same topics were also the target of the brickbats. Brickbats --------- "I am against the radical change in the quiz format of confining the answers to the identity of the singer. It is no longer an RJGK, just an orphan one-off quiz." - Ashok "The motive behind an RJGK is that people think about the songs and then they get discussed on RMIM based on what people have to say about them. [...] some of that has been lost by your not requiring the participants to guess the song. Due to the match-the-pairs format (and the nature of many of the subclues) it is, in fact, totally unnecessary to guess many songs in this quiz and simply go by a process of elimination to arrive at the right answer. Therefore while I absolutely loved this as a 'guess the singer' quiz, I am a little uncomfortable about it being an RJGK." - Neeraj Perhaps the hardest-hitting invective was reserved for the change in format. Some of the criticism was based on a somewhat fuzzy notion of having despoiled the "spirit of RJGK". To such criticism I direct the cliches about change being the spice of life and such. The earliest RJGKs had a format that was slightly different from the norm today, and doubtless some enterprising soul decided to make that change! Some participants felt that making the song-guessing un-mandatory made this a "quiz", not an RJGK. I differ. In most of the entries I received, I noticed that people had guessed the song and then proceeded to match the singer. True, they didn't have to guess the song necessarily, but most of them found that to be the logical path. In the same breath, my initial misgiving about taxing the lay participant by asking him/her to go through _two_ steps to get an answer (guess the song, then guess the singer) was unfounded. "I think that no-credit-for-finding-the-song and the match-the-columns approach make the quiz a tad bit on the easy side." - Chetan "An innovative way of conducting RJGK but I think you should have asked for identifying the song too." - Anup This is perhaps one of the few quizzes to suffer criticism for being too easy, because the usual trend is to make too tough a quiz. However, an easy quiz increases participation by making solving enjoyable. "[Missed out] classical singers, eg, Bhimsen Joshi, Amir Khan, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Serious omissions: Pankaj Mullick, CH Atma, Subir Sen, Kabban Mirza, SD Batish, GM Durrani, Talat Aziz." - Ashok "[Missed out] Rafi, Kishore and Mukesh [but included] Kumar Sanu, Shabbir Kumar, and Bhappi Lahiri." - Ambrish "Clubbing the likes of Saigal, Hemanta, Manna and Talat alongside the Sanus and the Shailendras ?! Protest !" - Chetan "Truly Obscure Singers Left Out: Usha Timothy ("jab jab bahaar aayii"); Subir Sen ("manzil vahi hai pyaar kii"); K.N. Sharma ("khoTaa paisaa nahii.n chalegaa"); Minoo Purushottam ("raat piyaa ke sa.Ng"); Kamal "chipmunk" Barot ("na sun sun sun buraa"); Anwar, Krishna Kalle, S.D. Batish, Manhar Udhas, Kabban Mirza, etc." - Surajit "[Missed out] Anwar [...] no need to include Manna Dey, Hemant Kumar, KJ Yesudas [...]" - Anup "Anwar [...] is far better than some of the singers selected in this quiz. [Missed out] Manhar Udhas, N. Chanchal, and Maestro Pankaj Mullick. Hemant K, and Talat Mehmood could have been avoided as they have also been fairly overrated on RMIM, at least in RJGKs." - Hema There were the expected grumbles about leaving out some singer or the other, disregarding some MD or the other and the usual shock and consternation at including the words "Manna Dey" and "Shabbir Kumar" in the same post. What can I say? There are only 26 letters to the alphabet, so I chose fewer singers. Granted I left out a Pankaj Mullick or a Ghulam Ali, but it was possibly because I did not stumble upon a popular song, or because I felt that some other singer's songs would be better received. This quiz was about male singers, not about MDs, so I didn't even check the stats while collating the songs. "The descriptions of the singers [...] just regurgitate the lowest-common-denominator stereotypes that prevail in RMIM. It is not a question of stereotypes being systematically wrong; quite often, stereotypes are partially right. It is just that stereotypes are boring. Likewise, the descriptions lack imagination, deep insights, or odd and interesting ways of looking at the singers as so many hues in the overall spectrum." - Ashok "Zero-information descriptors for tracks and for singers [are futile]." - Chetan "In a large number of cases, the singer can be guessed by reading the description in the hint. So, the roles of the hints and the clues are reversed. People would try to answer by the description and use the clue only in case of ambiguity." - Ashok A valid point was raised about the "hints" being information-lacking and subjective. A counter-criticism was that I had interchanged the roles of the "clue" and the "hint" because people would now guess the answer from the "hint" and check with the "clue" instead of the other way around. The perceptive reader will notice that these two criticisms are somewhat counter to each other, yet valid. I debated about whether to include hard information in the hints or not and then decided not to because I felt it would make the quiz even simpler. Besides, it seemed like a nice idea to describe a singer as best as I could rather than give facts out of a database. To this extent, I may have worked harder on setting up this quiz than some others because I couldn't just refer to a book - I had to think about the singer's voice. I tried to be accurate in such a subjective venture. My clues may not have been insightful or different, but I couldn't reconcile the insightful requirement with the easy requirement. "EEYIKES!!!!! U tired of living or what? SACHIN, SACHIN AND SACHIN (I think I am already blue in the face). I will even accept Sachindra Deo Varman as he was known in his early movies, but SHANKAR? Hope we are not confusing him with S of SJ. That would be blasphemous, confusing SDB with SJ (and it is blasphemy for SDB, incase it is not clear)" - Ketan "Does solving the quiz also entail re-christening some of the the singers or changing their names in part? If so, here is our 'solution'; K.L.Saigal = Kishore Lal Saigal, R.D.Burman = Roshan Dev Burman, K.J.Yesudas = Kalyan Ji Yesudas." - Bhuvna "A duet has sneaked in: 'Noorie': "aa jaa re" singers are Lata and Nitin Mukesh." - Ashok A duet sneaked into the quiz. The Noorie title song is apparently a duet with Lata. Apologies. "mehbooba mehbooba" from Sholay is a far more popular song than "jaana o meri jaana" from Sanam Teri Kasam for R. D. Burman. I'm amazed it escaped me while I was setting the quiz. My stout apologies for butchering S. D. Burman and A. Ghoshal's first names. I plead the Fifth. However, I did get Kamalahasan right... Lastly, for those who have had the patience to sit through this longish post, here's some cheer: there won't be any more. I'm retiring from RMIM. My automailer will still be up and running, and any queries regarding that will be welcome over email. But I won't read or contribute to RMIM, nor participate in any way. It's been fun being here, but one moves on. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- The complete stats for each song in the quiz follow along with comments from participants. a-13 Singer : Jagjit Singh Song : honthon se choo lo tum mera geet amar kar do Film : Prem Geet MD : Jagjit Singh Lyrics : Indivar Clue : na umr ki seema ho, na janam ka ho bandhan jab pyaar karein koi, to dekhein keval man Hint : A ghazal singer who has a rather large fan following. His rich, deep voice has lent a timeless quality to his soulful, romantic, yet sorrowful film songs. Comment: "A somewhat self-pitying song, rather dull." - Surajit "I don't understand why he has to repeat the same music score for almost all his compositions?" - Hema b-12 Singer : Hemant Kumar Song : tum pukaar lo tumhaara intezaar hai tum pukaar lo Film : Khamoshi MD : Hemant Kumar Lyrics : Gulzar Clue : honth pe liye hue, dil ki baat hum jaagte rahenge aur kitni raat hum muqtasar si baat hai tumse pyaar hai Hint : The distinctive voice of the bhadralok, this singer is soft and haunting at times, yet quite playful in some duets. c-17 Singer : Kumar Sanu Song : ek ladki ko dekha to aisa laga Film : 1942 - A Love Story MD : R. D. Burman Lyrics : Javed Akhtar Clue : jaise khushiyon ka dvaar jaise man mein ho pyaar jaise koyal ki bol jaise naagin ki dol jaise misri ki daal jaise sargam ki taal jaise ambar mein ho ek taara naya Hint : Starting out as a clone of an extremely popular singer he's gone only downhill. Over the years, his voice has become less basal and more nasal, so much so that finding any good solos from him is hard. The above lyrics are a netter's addition to a very popular song. You can guess the song from the meter itself. As for the unknown but talented netter, will he step up? d-19 Singer : Mahendra Kapoor Song : tum agar saath dene ka vaada karo main yuhin mast naghme Film : Hamraaz MD : Ravi Lyrics : Sahir Ludhianvi Clue : tum agar mujhko apna samajhne lago main bahaaron ki mehfil sajaata rahoon Hint : His voice lacks subtlety and delicateness. Few can match his "epic" ability to sing really loudly at high pitches though. Comment: "Nice clueing. Even after I got the ans, took me a while to figure out the reference to 'epic'." - Ramakrishnan e-23 Singer : Pankaj Udhas Song : chitthi aayi hai aayi hai chitthi aayi hai Film : Naam MD : Laxmikant-Pyarelal Lyrics : Anand Bakshi Clue : upar mera naam likha hai, andar ye paigaam likha hai o pardes ko jaanewaale, laut ke phir na aanewaale Hint : He popularised pop-ghazals by riding the sharaab theme to death. A reasonably pleasant, thin voice. Comment: "If going by Pankaj Udhas' definition, ghazal only means sharab and shabab. He desperately needs a lesson from Abhay:-)" - Hema "Pop-ghazals was all I needed to nail this...." - Rajesh f-25 Singer : Remo Fernandes Song : ek ho gaye hum aur tum to ud gaye ninde re Film : Bombay MD : A. R. Rehman Lyrics : Mehboob Clue : hain pehli baar mile, milte hi dum nikle milte hi jawaani dheere dheere madhyam machle re Hint : One of our most talented singers not to sing enough in films. His albums and few film songs reflect a wild and wacky talent for playing with rhythm. Comment: "You do need to qualify "one of our most talented..." Is Remo really so talented ? Is he so very well known ?" - Chetan "After listening to this, I have realized the potential of Remo as a singer." - Hema "I can't think of anyone else in the group who deserves more. I totally agree with you in your evaluation that he is wild and wacky. If I'm wrong, I still stick to what I said." - Rajesh g-16 Singer : K. J. Yesudas Song : surmai ankhiyon mein nanha munna ek sapna de ja re Film : Sadma MD : Illayaraja Lyrics : Gulzar Clue : sachcha koi sapna deja mujhko koi apna deja anjaana sa magar kuch pehchaana sa halka phulka shabnami resham se bhi reshmi Hint : One of the most accomplished singers ever to sing in films. His voice is mellifluous, yet supremely accomplished. Decorated with many national awards, this singer has sung in almost every Indian language. Comment: "[...] surprisingly dull song. The Tamil original is better. Agree with you about Yesudas's general abilities though. Bad target-practice pun: Yesudas is a man of great calibre, but this song is a small bore." - Surajit h-2 Singer : Amitabh Bachchan Song : jidhar dekhoon teri tasveer nazar aati hai Film : Mahaan MD : R. D. Burman Lyrics : Anand Bakshi Clue : bina dekhein, bina jaane, tan man baandhe jo bandhan jo, janam janam, mar ke juda na ho teri chaahat wohi zanjeer... Hint : There's no mistaking this baritone. Most certainly not a frequent singer, because the lack of practice shows, but his sense of timing in a song and his felicity in the lower scales must be heard to be believed. Comment: "The Big B is a bass, not a baritone." - Surajit "Baritone is a dead give-away." - Rajesh "You are 100% right about the "has to be heard to be believed" part. I don't believe it because I haven't heard it. And I bet you haven't either. I mean if you have a baritone voice but you cannot go much beyond your nominal "sa", you cannot claim felicity in the lower register ! AB must be the only singer in the world who has sung professionally but has a vocal range of significantly less than one octave !!" - Chetan i-28 Singer : Shailendra Song : main shaayar to nahin magar ae haseen jab se dekha Film : Bobby MD : Laxmikant-Pyarelal Lyrics : Anand Bakshi Clue : pyaar ka naam maine suna tha magar pyaar kya hai, yeh mujhko nahin thi khabar main to uljha raha uljhanon ki tarah doston mein raha dushmanon ki tarah Hint : A surprise singer who did quite well for Rishi Kapoor's first film as an adult. His voice is youthful and a bit nasal. Comment: "It was appropriate to leave out his last name--Shailendra can't Singh." - Surajit "Our adjective for Shailendra Singh's voice will be 'robust'." - Neeraj j-4 Singer : Ashok Kumar Song : rail gaadi rail gaadi beechwaale station bole ruk ruk ruk ruk Film : Aashirwaad MD : ? Lyrics : ? Clue : talegaon malegaon malegaon talegaon Hint : A much-venerated thespian and occasional singer takes to vocal gymnastics in this song. His voice is surprisingly good for someone who you'd think wouldn't be able to sing at all. Comment: "What do you mean, one wouldn't expect him to sing? He started out as a singing hero and was immensely popular: "mai.n ban kii chiDiyaa banke ban ban boluu.N re." - Surajit "There's one song of Dada Muni that I simply adore. That is 'main ban ki chidiya banke' with Devika Rani from Achhut Kanya." - Hema k-3 Singer : Anoop Ghoshal Song : tujhse naaraaz nahin zindagi hairaan hoon main Film : Masoom MD : R. D. Burman Lyrics : Gulzar Clue : zindagi tere gham ne hamein rishte naye samjhaaye mile jo hamein dhoop mein mile chhaanv ke thande saaye Hint : A little-known singer whose one song is a classic. His voice has a somewhat dreamy basal quality to it. Comment: "With all due respect, AG has no sense of sur or laya whatsoever, going by the one song I have heard from him." - Chetan "We presume you meant 'little known' in Hindi film world --- in Bangla land Anup Ghoshal enjoys immense popularity." - Neeraj l-33 Singer : Udit Narayan Song : paapa kehte hain bada naam karega beta hamaara aisa kaam karega Film : Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak MD : Anand-Milind Lyrics : Majrooh Sultanpuri Clue : baithe hain milke, sab yaar apne sabke dilon mein, armaan yeh hai woh zindagi mein, kal kya banega har ek nazar ka, sapna yeh hai koi engineer ka kaam karega business mein koi apna naam karega Hint : A youthful singer who puts a lot of energy and enthusiasm in his songs. As is the norm these days, his voice lacks much variation, but he certainly comes up with the hits - some of them "cheezy". Comment: "This guy's singing is ultimate in "Jaadu teri nazar". His voice sounds very fresh and enthu." - Hema m-29 Singer : Sachin Dev Burman Song : mere saajan hain us paar, main man maar, tu us paar Film : Bandini MD : S. D. Burman Lyrics : Gulzar Clue : man ki kitaab se tu, mera naam hi mita dena gun to na tha koi bhi, avagun mere bhula dena Hint : A gifted music director with an ear for folk tunes. His voice is rather unconventional. n-6 Singer : Bappi Lahiri Song : meethi hai mosambi to kadva hai karela Film : Aap Ke Khaatir MD : Bappi Lahiri Lyrics : ? Clue : ab naa koi ho kadka, na koi paisewaala array array naachenge sab milke, jeeja ho ya saala Hint : A music director with pretensions to singing. A voice and lingo that is typically Bombay-ish and an accent that's bizarre, his songs must be euphemistically called "interesting". Comment: "You could with equal justice have said that he has pretensions to being a music director!" - Surajit o-1 Singer : Amit Kumar Song : bade acche lagte hain yeh dharti yeh nadiyaan yeh raina aur tum Film : Balika Badhu MD : R. D. Burman Lyrics : Anand Bakshi Clue : hum tum kitne paas hain kitne door hain chaand sitaare sach poocho to man ko jhoote lagte hain yeh saare Hint : His father was a famous singer himself, but the son does not live merely in the father's shadow. A strong voice that can reach a high pitch when needed is a characteristic of this singer. Comment: "A talented singer IMO, who was unfortunately reduced to singing disco songs." - Hema p-14 Singer : Jaspal Singh Song : geet gaata chal o saathi gungunaata chal Film : Geet Gaata Chal MD : Ravindra Jain Lyrics : Ravindra Jain Clue : khula-khula gagan yeh hari-bhari dharti jitna bhi dekhoon tabiyat nahin bharti sundar se sundar har ek rachna phool kahe kaanton se bhi sikho hansna Hint : Not much has been heard from this singer ever since he made a big splash with his youthful voice, singing and going along... Comment: "They come and they go." - Rajesh q-8 Singer : Bhupinder Song : dil dhoondhta hai phir wohi fursat ke raat din Film : Mausam MD : Madan Mohan Lyrics : Gulzar Clue : ya garmiyon ki raat jo puravaaiyaan chalein thandi safed chaadaron pe jaagen der tak taaron ko dekhte rahen chhat par pade hue Hint : The man's voice defines a dreamy laziness. Eminently suited as he is to ghazals and slow songs, his frivolous songs sound funny. Comment: "Inviting flames from the Sahir gang, are we, Nuts?" - Surajit "Only he could have sung "din khali khali bartan hain" as he really has that empty dream kind of a voice." - Hema r-18 Singer : Kundan Lal Saigal Song : jab dil hi toot gaya hum jee ke kya karenge Film : Shahjehan MD : Naushad Lyrics : Majrooh Sultanpuri Clue : maaloom na tha itni, mushkil hain meri raahen mushkil hain meri raahen armaan ke bahe aansoo, hasrat ki bhari aahen har saathi chhoot gaya, har saathi chhoot gaya Hint : Doubtless, the emperor. His voice inspired many clones, some of whom became famous in their own right and inspired other clones. Comment: "Good hint about the movie's name. Clones: Mukesh-Nitin Mukesh, C.H. Atma-Chandru Atma. You're right. Second-generation clones! Scary thought." - Surajit s-22 Singer : Nitin Mukesh Song : aaja re aaja re o mere dilbar aaja dil ki pyaas bujhaaja re Film : Noorie MD : Khaiyyam or Laxmikant-Pyaarelaal Lyrics : Jan Nissar Akhtar or Majrooh Sultanpuri Clue : aaja re aaja re o mere dilbar aaja dil ki pyaas bujhaaja re Hint : The son of a famous singer, he has done little to redeem himself. He gives the impression he hasn't decided whether to strike out on his own or cash in on his father's popularity. t-20 Singer : Manna Dey Song : laaga chunari mein daag chupaaoon kaise Film : Dil Hi To Hai MD : Roshan Lyrics : Sahir Ludhianvi Clue : kori chunariya aatma mori mail hai maayaajaal woh duniya more baabul ka ghar yeh duniya sasuraal haan jaake, baabul se nazren milaaoon kaise, ghar jaaoon kaise Hint : A supremely-gifted classical singer, he has sometimes been accused of making some songs too classical. However, he does have some very pleasant, hummable and wacky songs to his credit. u-24 Singer : Rahul Dev Burman Song : jaana o meri jaana main hoon tere khwaabon ka raaja Film : Sanam Teri Kasam MD : R. D. Burman Lyrics : ? Clue : naazneen gulbadan aankhen hain maikhaana dekh to pyaar se aisa kya tadpaana Hint : As a music director he was a genius, as a singer he was bizarre. A thick, throatal voice. v-31 Singer : Suresh Wadkar Song : saanjh dhale gagan tale hum kitne ekaanki Film : Utsav MD : Laxmikant-Pyarelal Lyrics : Vasant Dev Clue : jugnu ka pat odhe aayegi raat abhi nishigandha ke sur mein keh degi baat sabhi kapta hai man jaise daali ambuva ki Hint : One of the more accomplished recent singers. Trained and talented, a voice that can be gentle, but betrays an accent. Comment: "[...] to my Maharashtrian ears, Wadkar doesn't betray an accent; Yesudas does." - Surajit "Somehow I think Suresh Wadkar lacks some element in his singing. His voice doesn't have a "wazan" and is too plain. He cannot carry any emotion in his songs." - Hema "If Hridaynath Mangeshkar finds him good enough then he is good. His rendition of the song in Lekin is one of my favourites." - Rajesh w-27 Singer : Shabbir Kumar Song : premi hoon paagal hoon main paagal hoon main Film : Betaab MD : R. D. Burman Lyrics : Anand Bakshi? Clue : tum bulaao main na aaoon aisa harjaai nahin itne din tumko hi meri yaad tak aayi nahin Hint : A clone who couldn't hold his own. He has a few good songs, especially the slow ones. x-5 Singer : Aziz Nazan Song : na haram mein na sukun milta hai butkhaane mein Film : 5 Rifles MD : Aziz Nazan Lyrics : Nasa Sholapuri Clue : mausam-e-gul mein to peene ka maza aata hai peenewaalon ko hi jeene ka maza aata hai jaam uthaale aa aa, munh se lagaale aa aa jaam uthaale, munh se lagaale, munh se lagaakar choom choom choom Hint : One of the best-known qawwals makes a musical presence in films. He is famous for being able to take his nasal voice up to incredibly high pitches, and just when imitators thought they had mastered his pitch, he'd go higher. y-32 Singer : Talat Mehmood Song : yeh hawa yeh raat yeh chaandni teri ek ada pe nissar hai Film : Sangdil MD : Sajjad Lyrics : Rajinder Krishan Clue : tujhe kya khabar hai o bekhabar teri ek nazar mein hai kya asar jo gazab mein aaye to kehr hai jo ho mehrbaan woh qaraar hai Hint : The silken voice, the king of sorrow, a voice that can make the steeliest heart weep - the epithets come easily. His gentle and at times shaky voice conveys hurt like few other voices can. Comment: "I'd be a mute listener to his songs any day." - Rajesh z-26 Singer : Sripathi Panditharadyula Balasubramaniam Song : mere jeevan saathi pyaar kiye ja Film : Ek Duuje Ke Liye MD : Laxmikant-Pyarelal Lyrics : Anand Bakshi Clue : hey hare raama hare krishna, dil hi to hai aashiq hoon bahaaron ka, tere mere sapne tere ghar ke saamne, aamne-saamne, shaadi ke baad haan haan haan haan humaare-tumhaare munna, guddi, tinku, mili, cincinnati babla-boo khel khel mein, shor johnny mera naam, chori mera kaam, raam aur shyaam hat, bandalbaaz milan, geet gaata chal, pyaar ka mausam besharam! Hint : Very talented, not classically trained but quite accomplished. However, the overwhelming quality about his singing seems to be his accent which doesn't always suit the song he sings. Comment: "We always knew you had a wacky sense of humor and here you go, proving it again by ending the quiz with this Bizzaro song!" - Surajit ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
