------------------------------------------------------------------------- Answers and Results of Rafi Duets RJGK ------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "U.V. Ravindra" Subject: RJGK [38]: The Answers/Results Post Date: 16 Jul 1997 09:35:18 -0700 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Okay, here goes ... hope I get it right this time. I had posted the RJGK [38] results yesterday, but looks like Zippo has some upper limit set on the length of the articles postable [is there such a word? ;)]. I'm dividing the post up into 3 logical :) sections and posting them separately to work around this limit. Thanks. -- UVR) Greetings, RMIMers! Here we are with the post you have waited patiently for! Hope the wait was as good for you as it was for us :)) Before going on to the actual answers/results section of this post, we would like to share some secrets about the quiz with you (it's okay, you don't have to cover the kids' impressionable eyes now :)). We have already talked about how we came about deciding that the topic would be Rafi Duets in the RJGK [38] Intro post. Once the topic of Rafi duets was decided, we had to decide how the songs would be organized. It is at this point when we were strolling around in the light drizzle of a rainy North Carolina morning that Pavan was hit by a lightning bolt. The accident fired his brain (read that again, it's not "fried", it's "fired") and set the wheels of imagination into motion -- and thus came about the idea of setting the songs in a film of our own: a film you all have seen and read and, hopefully, liked. We then had to decide what exact songs would go into the making of the movie, which MDs we would choose, which co-singers we would rope in, and who the lyricists would be, and so on. As it turned out, we focussed more on some of these criteria and zoomed out of some others, and modified yet others to suit the changing face of time :)) For example, we wanted to have a different accompanying singer for each song in the quiz. However, we were stopped dead in our tracks by the RJGK guidelines which exhorted us to keep the songs easy and popular (we would have to find nearly 30 different singers that Rafi teamed up with, and though we did have that list, we didn't think the quiz would be too enjoyable with so many uncommon and rare songs in it). Additionally, we felt that including all male duets was exactly the kind of cheap trick which some lesser RMIMers would adopt as an escape route from needing to find *real* duets and also to fool the participants and shunned ourselves off of those. Also, songs with more than two singers (even those that can be classified as essentially being *duets*) did not evoke the same kind of mushy feeling and sentimental ambience that a "pure" duet does, and so we imposed a ban on such songs for ourselves. At the same time, we wanted as many singers as possible to feature in our film. All these restrictions made the selection of the songs much more difficult as we quickly realised that we could have easily conducted a Rafi-Lata or a Rafi-Asha RJGK, but a Rafi-Duets was a different ball-game slightly. Eventually, we came up with the following criteria, listed in the order of merit based on how important a role they played in selecting the songs. 1. Selection of singer: Every singer got at least one song if she had a reasonably popular song with Rafi. We let our horribly biased opinions guide us in deciding which songs were "reasonably popular". :) 2. Distribution in time. We tried to ensure that we had songs spread over the various decades of Rafi's singing. 3. Multiple songs by a singer. The number of songs by a particular singer was sought to be directly proportional to our perceived popularity of that singer (with the horribly biased opinions coming into play again :)). The only exception to this was Suman Kalyanpur: we were ourselves taken quite by surprise when we found that we had so many songs by her in the quiz! Guess Suman is one for the duets, eh? :)) 4. Distribution of MDs. Tried to get in as many as we could. Here our biases clearly show, but we were not in total control of the situation. The above three constraints worked against us and we had to make some really tough and uncomfortable decisions. 5. The songs had to fit in the "story". This was not as big a problem as some would think. We mentioned this in the Intro posting and we are mis-quoting Sami :) again: "for every REAL life situation, there exists atleast one REAL RAFI-DUET which can be sung in your IMAGINARY world"(*) (*) Refer to Chaaya Geets on Sami's page for further elaboration on this. 6. Despite one of us being a terrible lyrics fanatic (no prizes for guessing which one), we were not overly concerned about which lyricists we would feature. This aspect of the quiz was discovered by Suneeta Donepudi, whom we humbly nominate RMIM's resident Agatha Christie. The first five criteria had yielded enough songs to achieve a "satisfactory" lyricist distribution, and we were not interested in tweaking the song selection list for fear of upsetting the delicately achieved equilibrium. We have *14* different lyricists, by no means a meager list! This is what the (lies, damned lies and) statistics :)) of the quiz look like: Asha = Lata = 7 :) [Go on, resuscitate the war! :))] Suman = 5 Geeta = 4 Suraiyya = 2 Noorjehan = 1 Arati Mukherji = 1 Sulakshana Pandit= 1 Sushma Shreshta = 1 Sharda = 1 Mubarak Begum = 1 Shamshad Begum = 1 MDs : O.P.Nayyar = Shankar Jaikishan 4 Madan Mohan = 3.5 Naushad, S.D.Burman, R.D.Burman = 3 Husnlal Bhagatram, Hemant Kumar = 2 Jaidev = 1.5 Ravi, C.Ramachandra = Khiayyam, Iqbal Qureshi, Firoz Nizami, Usha Khanna = 1 Lyricists: Majrooh = 9 Rajinder K = 4 Sahir, Hasrat = 3 Shakeel, Gulzar, Qamar J = 2 Shailendra, Maqdoom, Kaifi Azmi, Tanvir Naqvi, Jan Nisar Akhtar, Asad Bhopali, Saawan K = 1 The RJGK guidelines on keeping the songs easy and popular also resulted in another peculiarity of this quiz -- the length of the clues. You see, we wanted to make the quiz devilishly enjoyable: the typical RJGK participant is a hopeless egomaniac :-)) [go ahead, sue my employer :))] who derives some kind of perverse pleasure by deciphering the songs by reading as little as possible of the clue (or even without reading the clues at all). We had to cater to this majority of RMIM population ... as it turned out, most of the RMIMers who did not do well on the quiz have complained about the length of the clues :))) Total of 15 participants in all: Balaji and Malini Madhusudan and Aniruddha Nita Vijay Kumar Kottapalli Prince and Neeraj Malhotra Deepak B Gothe the wife-husband team of Harmesh and Surjit Swatee Naik Ramki Anil Hingorani Neha Sami Hema Ikram & Kalyan Renu Thamma & Neeraj Deshmukh This list, we feel, is indicative of the changing character of RMIM with the times. Out with the old order, in with the new, it seems to be saying. May I (UVR) seize this opportunity to shamelessly campaign for ARR :))) He does *not* suck in dauD. :))) :))) [hey, take it easy, guys! it's just a joke] Most of the participants seemed to have enjoyed the quiz. The most common complaint was regarding the length of the quiz. General comments about the quiz : [Balaji and Malini] Nice quiz. Great composition. Enjoyed solving this one. However, one gripe, instead of repeating so many songs of Lata and Geeta, you could have given more singers or at least have had a better distribution. Better still would have been having 30 different combinations. Otherwise the song selections are very good. Also, as we went along, we almost felt as if we are solving a Majrooh quiz :) It appears that a lot of planning and effort went into this RJGK. The idea to incorporate a film story is brilliant. The story flows through pretty smoothly and songs are chosen well. However, you could have accomodated a few more singers without "compromising on the plot" nor compromising the quality of the songs herein. -- [Madhu and Aniruddha] The story in the quiz was a neat idea. I know you wont believe this, but we had thought of doing a Chitrahaar on similar lines. Of course now we wont do it :-) So, reading your RJGK we felt like "tumne hamaarey chitrahaar ki baat cheen li" :-) Great job. I am sure it required a lot of thinking (concocting situations to fit these songs in :-) I feel if you had removed the restrictions of "Rafi" and "duets", then your film could have been more action packed and melodramatic :-) -- [Nita] However, I feel sometimes the clues made it too easy. I could identify the song without even looking at the antaraa. On the whole, a enjoyable quiz. -- [Kuntal Shah] I am not making an attempt to solve RJGK-38 ( finding it a bit too difficult as always been a case for me with RJGK ) but let me tell you that it makes for an interesting reading. A real path-breaker from previous ones. Keep it up !! -- [Vijay Kumar K] Enjoyed the quiz...definitly so. However, with a theme like Rafi duets, you are going to have everyone cribbing which of their favourite songs was left out. So here is my list 1. vo hai.N zara, khafa khafa (OK, so Vandana had it in her quiz recently) 2. ishaaro-ishaaro mei.N / deevana hua baadal both from Kashmir ki kali 3. bahut shukria, baDi meherbaani 4. chaand sa mukhDa kyun sharmaya? And why the decision to exclude male duets? certainly missed 5. gham ki andheri raat me did you *have to* use my name for your quiz :) -- [Prince and Neeraj] We enjoyed the quiz, very nice songs. At first, it seemed like a VERY tough quiz, perhaps because of the lines chosen as the clue, but one started to recognize the songs after repeated readings. We hope you have a great turnout. -- [Deepak Gothe] First of all hats off for composing a beautiful RJGK.I am participating in RJGK for the first time. -- [Swatee Naik] I enjoyed your quiz, movie, & comments immensely -- [Sami] Thanks for the nice quiz. One small complaint: It was loooonnnggg! Story was interesting and so was the idea, but one had to labour hard and long to get to the clues. -- [Hema] Anywa, I liked the quiz very much. The selection of songs is very nice, though when i was reading (endlessly!) the narrative and clues, some other beautiful Rafi songs kept coming to my mind which could have been included. But no complaints, the "Master" has so many splendid renditions to his credit that it is really a difficult task to select a mere bunch of them. You guys have done a good job on your part. I cannot say the same thing for your entire writeup. I was really tired to read it. Maybe I was not in a right frame of mind to enjoy it, since I have been very busy this week. I am sure Ramlians enjoyed the "movie". -- [Hosts] We have instituted a special award for the most innovative comment on the quiz. If you have any doubts as to how this was decided, remember that the quiz-master's decision is final. The runners-up position for this award goes to [Ikram-Kalyan] "I say, old thing" (said Freddie plaintively,) "you couldn't speak a bit less, could you?" from "Leave it to Psmith" by PGWodehouse. who narrowly missed being at the top where we find ***Clap Clap Clap*** (thunderous 10dB applause, with trumpets and much fanfare, not to mention the red carpet with rose petals strewn all over) NEHA DESAI!!!!! With her penchant for similies referring to "day to day life situations", she can give any Gullu a run for his money!:):) [Neha] too long, boring and very much like the energizer bunny (keeps on going and going and going...:)) And now, friends, ladies and gentlemen :)) let's jump right into the answers/results section of this post. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- And now, friends, ladies and gentlemen :)) let's jump right into the answers/results section of this post: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ANSWERS TO RMIM-Jhim Geeton Ki (RJGK) 38 - Rafi-Duets ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pavan Kumar Desikan U.V. Ravindra & pkd@cs.duke.edu uvr@infogain.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Let us jump right into the film, now. Bypassing the childhood antics of our male protagonist, Vijay, the most popular hero in Hindi films (hamarii na maano Sami-bhai se puuchho ... jisne http://www.lehigh.edu/sm0e/public/www-data/sami.html rang diina Vijay-waa hamaraa :-)), we jump right into the adulthood(?) of Vijay. As is the norm, most of Vijay's life till the point of writing has been spent in searching for his "sapnon kii raani". For a long time Vijay was in the stages of having "laakho.n hai nigaah me.n, zindagii kii raah me.n, sanam hasiin javaan" but phir bhi us ko "miit naa milaa re man kaa". All of a sudden, however, his childhood girl-next-door has occupied his attention, and he has realised that Radha, this "shaa'ir kii GHazal, jheel kaa kaNwal" is his "dream girl". Pehli nazar meiN na sahi, par pyaar to ho hi gaya! ;-) But what about Radha? Does she also have amorous inclinations towards Vijay? At first look, it appears not to be so. Vijay has to go to extreme lengths to get Radha to look at him ... it seems like the classic case of Biswajit and Madhubala ... heroine, an ethereal beauty, and the hero, a monkey out of the Sunderbuns. But, our hero is not one to give up so easily. He has to tell someone about his love for Radha ... Here in this song Vijay is confiding to a female friend of his, Maya, about his affections for Radha in this Naushad song (for you, Sami-bhai [where are you?]). Maya is singing too, in her nasal voice. Vijay tells Maya that he has lost his "qaraar": which is what happens when you are touched by the long arms of Love (which, if you're wondering, happen to be no relation at all of qaanoon ke lambe haath, BTW. ;-)) 1. ek to sundar mukhaDaa unakaa us par laakh adaae.N ham apane dil ko kahaa.N le jaaye.N akele duur khaDe lalachaye.N chaa.Nd sitaare, \-2 mast nazaare sab hai unhiiN ke saath Strike rate: [10/15] SONG: muhabbat chuume jinake haath STATS: Aan | Shamshad Begum | Naushad Ali | Shakeel Badayuni Comments: --------- [Vijay] Nice song...took me a moment to recollect. nice start, easy runs to start with but my memory betrays me ... I don't remember the song as a duet [Sami] great start with Naushad!! [Hosts] This song was for you, Sami :) [Anil] I know this, it's on the tip of my tongue but doesn't want to come out:-( ------------------------ Maya tells Vijay that he should let his "object" of desire know about his feelings. Not being the 'Darpok' kind of person who would sing "vo saamane aatii, saa.Ns hii aTakatii hai, aur phir zubaan jaatii hai phisal", Vijay takes the matter straight to the heroine, Radha, and declares that he has fallen in love with her in this lively and humorous song, where Radha, obviously doubtful of Vijay's sincerity is rebuffing his advances. The punning reference to "patang" in this song is simply wonderful. The lyricist is Majrooh Sultanpuri. 2. pyaar kii nazar se duur, yuu.N na zindagii guzaar husn tuu hai ishq mai, kar dil\-e\-nazar ko chaar chaar mai.n nazar karuu.N, aur phir huzuur se? paas yuu.N naa aaIye, baat kiijiye duur se Strike rate: [12/15] SONG: sun sun sun sun zaalimaa STATS: Aar Paar | Geeta Dutt | O.P.Nayyar | Majrooh S ------------------------ This attempt at wooing Radha has fallen flat on its face ... Vijay now has to think of a new strategy to "get" Radha. He gets this chance to "line marofy" Radha at the party thrown by her industrialist father, in whose establishment Vijay works (as a Computer Engineer, too :-)) During the inevitable music and dance session of the party, Vijay seizes the bull of opportunity by the horns (no pun :-), revamps his strategy and invites Radha to come to him as he indeed is her love. He tells her that she needs him as much as he loves her. She responds that as much as he loves her, she needs ... to examine ... him. 3. tumape hazaaro.n kii aa.Nkhe.n chaahiye tumako sahaaraa o palako.n me aao chupaaluun naazuk tan hai tumhaaraa o Is this music director a copycat or a genius? or both? Opinions on this topic seem to vary. But this movie was one of his first hits and he eventually married the female playback singer of this song. Strike rate: [15/15] (Hosts: Not surprising at all :)) SONG: aajaa aajaa main huun pyaar teraa STATS: Teesri Manzil | Asha | RDBurman | Majrooh Song location: http://roblix.eng.ohio-state.edu:80/isongs/hindi/splitindex/ascii/908.s [Hema] Where in the world did computer engineer came from?! I thought the hero was a drummist in that movie. [Pavan] You actually have two movies with exactly the same song. The first movie was Teesri Manzil, and the other movie with the same song is "RJGK-38: A Loud Story", in which the hero is a Computer Engineer:) [Ravindra] Oh! The things people get confused by... :)) It's "drummer", BTW ;) :) :)) ------------------------- Despite what she sang in the above song, Radha is extremely peeved with Vijay's attempt to "line marofy" her so openly in a party at *her* house. She has to show him his right place! How better to do this than by admonishing him for his uncivilized behavior and make him "pay respects to the mistress" of the house? Singing Asad Bhopali's lyrics in Suman Kalyanpur's non-Lata-ish voice for Ravi, Radha also tells Vijay that it would be a good idea if he took a look at his own face in the mirror before trying and funny romeo-ish stunts. 4. zaraa shariif la.Dakiyo.n se baat karanaa siikhiye \-2 phir usake baad aaine me.n, apanii shakl dekhiye hamaare mehamaan thhe, to baat aake Tal gayii nahii.n to log puuchhate, ye shakl kyuu.N badal gayii Strike Rate: [4/15] SONG: zaraasi baat pyaar kii, zubaan se nikal gayii STATS: Salaam Memsaab | Suman Kalyanpur | Ravi | Asad Bhopali [Vijay] Thanks to Vandana's old, long-forgotten post, and my perseverence. Found this on Sami's page. Kinda makes this quiz interesting [Hosts] ... and Vandana is getting old, forgetting to send in an entry :) [Balaji] Seeing #4 in the quiz was a pleasant surprise, a nice song indeed. [Hosts] As expected, this was the toughest song in the quiz. We thought that the p-stats would make hunting for the song easy. Looks as though only Vijay made a serious attempt in hunting the song:(. Inspite of this being a nice song, we do not get to hear it very often. ------------------------- As usual, there must be regret after such brazenly rash an act! It was easy for Radha to call Vijay all those names in the party, because she was not listening to her heart strings. "main dil se nahin, dimaagh se kaam le rahi thi", she realizes! So our hero has succeeded in making an impression on her, after all! All that monkeying around has had its desired effect! After all, the object of our man's sentiments is in the grips of her "jaalim javaanii" too and extremely susceptible to being bitten by the love bug. In the quiet after the party, Radha asks herself, "Is this not what I want? Is this not what I have always been looking forward to?" This is the first time in the movie where we find the heroine responding positively to the advances of the hero. So cheer up :-) all ye hopeless romantics! The song is from a film named after a popular love story in the Indian lore. It has a popular pair of MDs as music directors. However, they are not a duo like Shanky-J or Anand-Milind but they are two music directors. The female playback is by Lata. 5. javaanI maa.NgatI thI ye hansii.n jhanakaar baraso.n se\-2 tamannaa bun rahii thii dhaDakano.n ke haar baraso.n se chhup chhup ke aanevaale tere pyaar ke sadake Strike Rate: [13/15] SONG: is reshamii paazeb kii jhanakaar ke sadaqe STATS: Laila Majnu | Lata | Madan Mohan & Jaidev | Sahir [Vijay wonders] Sahir has done some great work with Khayyam (Kabhi-2, Phir Subah Hogi) and Jaidev (Hum dono), why are the songs in this film so pedestrian? [Ravindra] I had a good mind to disqualify more than 60% of the respondents who got this song wrong, in *my* opinion. Almost everyone wrote "is reshmi paa*j*eb ki jhankaar ke sad*k*e" or something of that nature. Even those who wrote the correct "sadqe" made a mistake in "paajeb". RMIMers, RMIMers ... it is not "paajeb" it is "paazeb", as in "paa" (foot) + "zeb" (ornament). PAAZEB, PAAZEB, okay? The next time anyone makes such an exasperating mistake, they will have to write an imposition 1000 times on the blackboard: "paazeb, paazeb, paazeb ..." samjhe? :))) As an aside, "paajeb", if valid, would probably mean "the pocket in the foot" or some such ridiculous thing. :)) Wot, Ikram? ------------------------- Of course, the hero Vijay is quite ignorantly in the dark about these feelings of Radha yet. He is quite shaken up after the thorough verbal drubbing down he was subjected to at the party last night. But he is a true lover (so what if he looks like a monkey?) and like a true lover he is not one to give up. But he is quite very much at a loss as to what he is supposed to do. He is completely confused and totally befuddled, and he just *has* to sing a song here ;-). There is only one lyricist who can depict the two-minded abstract feelings Vijay's been having, and that is Gulzar :-). In the following song by this abstract poet, Vijay pours out his confused state onto Radha, with an "stick hanging around his neck" in the "season" of love, a stick that sometimes appears to be the shackles around his feet, and sometimes the handcuffs on his hands. He wants out of this sinuousness in the path of love... or is it the other way around? ;-) 6. siidhe siidhe raaste ko tho.Daa saa mo.D de do bejo.D ruuho.n ko halakaa saa jo.D de do jo.D do naa TuuT jaaye saa.nso.n kii laDii Strike rate: [15/15] SONG: chha.Dii re chha.Dii kaisii gale me.n pa.Dii STATS: Mausam | Lata | Madan mohan | Gulzar ------------------------- There have been lots of movies in which the heroine fully satisfies the (beauty X brains = constant) equation, doing stupid things that land her in trouble and she has to wait for the hero to extricate her from the complicated situations that she lands herself in. Often, the only ingenuity she can display is the variety of sticky situations she can get herself enmeshed in. However, this is not one such movie. Our heroine, Radha, is not only an ethereal beauty (as we mentioned at the very outset), she is also well endowed with admirable intellectual abilities. She not only "understands" the complex lyrics Gulzar has written for Vijay, she is also busy preparing her "interpretation" of the lyrics [to post on RMIM with the standard "IMHO" disclaimer, of course :-)]. With the shrewd mind of a detective working in an Indian Govt agency [we know that is an oxymoron, but what the heck :)] she quickly recognizes the symptoms of love in the hero. She decides to have some fun with the befuddled hero. What better situation than this for a song? Radha is teasing Vijay for being in his own lost world (not the Jurassic Park one, though Vijay would give any horrifying dino a run for it's money) :-)) The "masti" in the female voice is unmistakeable. This voice has done a lot of cabaret songs. Here she sings for a music director who never used Lata in his songs. 7. gaate ho giit kyuu.N, dil pe kyuu.N haath hai khoye ho kis liye, aisii kyaa baat hai ye haal kab se tumhaaraa ho gayaa? [Hosts] What is wrong with the picturization? We think that it was satisfactory. [Balaji] The reference "voice has a lot of cabaret songs" points more to Asha than Geeta [Hosts] Well, when you consider the fact that Geeta *did* have a lot of cabaret songs (including "baabuji dheere chalna", and "mera naam chin-chin-chu" ...) and the fact that the quizmasters have the obligatory responsibility of trying to throw sand in the participants' eyes, it all miraculously makes sense, doesn't it? Then again, we didn't say the voice itself was "baazaaruu" -- only that there are a lot of baazaaruu songs in this voice. There is a difference. :-) (Maggi Hot and Sweet Tomato *Chilli* sauce) ;-) [Vijay] Interesting note on this. Once DD played this song on Rangoli and credited the lyrics to Majrooh. The next Sunday morning Rangoli had a letter from JNA's son, claiming his father had written the lyrics. DD apologised gracefully. [Hosts *incredulously*] You mean Javed Akhtar wrote that letter? ------------------------- The powers that man the Portals of Love have now decided that enough of wooing and booing has happened. The time has come for more serious action. Now that "pyaar ho gayaa", and "chupke se ikraar" bhi ho gaya, they must suffer the pangs of the meaningless distresses of love. Vijay, of course is smitten with love, and is unable to bear the separation of his javaan dil from the beauty of his heart's desire. Radha too has realised that she has "slowly slowly" fallen in love with Vijay. She is now attracted to him like never before and feels his growing presence in her life. 8. mahakane lagaa meri zulfo.n me.n koI lagii jaagane dha.Dakane.n soyii soyii merii har nazar aaj dil kii zubaa.N hai Excellent job by Majrooh! They have entered the phase where they can rooTho-manaao-fy with impunity, heaven may care, and can indulge in chhe.D-chhaa.D like there was no tomorrow. Did someone say Love brings out the mischievous side of man?! This song is perhaps the best chhe.D-chhaa.D song in Hindi filmdom. Vijay comes up with some smart one liners to tease Radha, but she has a reply to every one of them! If you were wondering "Can anyone get better than this?" after the clue to the previous song, you have an answer in this masterpiece of a song by Sahir Ludhiyanvi. 9. Radha tells Vijay that he may be in for trouble if he wants to further this relationship, because her father wants to get her married to a rich man, or his son ;-) and would do anything to get others out of the path. Vijay knows this. He also displays an almost human intelligence for the first time in the film, understanding the hints that Radha dropped in the previous song. He tells her that he's been knocked out cold by her lovely beauty and asks her to stay just a little longer, at least till he can gather his senses; she can leave then, if she wants. In reality, he is looking for an opportunity to show Radha how much he loves her, how much he adores her. Radha is blushing, and Vijay finds that the crimson glow on her cheeks makes her look even more beautiful. But first he has to pacify Radha, even if her anger was only a sham. The third powerful element, nature, is also playing its vital role. Radha. She is already feeling insecure. The "what if"-s have started plaguing her already. Yes, to be wise in retrospect is the easiest thing, but Radha's is a very real fear. She feels that she *belongs* to Vijay (whoever heard of such a crock of BS, eh?), and tells him never to leave her. Vijay echoes similar sentiments too. [Ravindra] For those who didn't attend the East Coast RMIMehfil: you missed a really marvellous rendition of this song by Ramesh Hariharan and wife. :) ------------------------- The mahiina of saavan and baarish kaa mausam have long been associated with the union of lovers. In the olden days, businessmen used to travel during summer selling their wares in towns far far away from home, and their wives would eagerly look forward for the monsoons, as that was the season their husbands used to return home. The theme of rain and love has embedded itself deep into Hindi films, but only for its visual effects enhancement :). We digress, however. Let's get back to the story. Radha's presentiment of judaii appears to be coming true. It has already been a couple of days since the TV-M rated scene, and she hasn't heard from Vijay at all (all ye single guys, hark! Always call your date on the days immdly following the day you took her out, okay?!) She has waited for him patiently, but he has not come. ;-) The season of rain is about to end and there is still no sign of her beloved. Nobody listen to Suraiyya songs? :-? ------------------------- Enter the ludicrous ubiquitous statement of Hindi films, used and reused all the way down to Maine Pyaar Kiya -- "ek javaan la.Dakaa aur la.Dakii kabhii dost nahiin ho sakate". What is the deal with Hindi movies? A single guy and a single girl can never be friends, without at least one of them having a crush on the other. Nargis and Dilip Kumar in Andaz, Raj Kumar and Sadhana in Waqt, and the list goes on. We have decided to keep our movie different. Remember Maya? (Go back to Clue#1 and start over, if you don't :-)) In her, our Vijay has a friend. A truer friend one scarcely would find, and all that sort of a thing, but unfortunately, Radha has seen too many Hindi movies (well, there is a bit of the stupid in everyone, isn't there?). She is unable to accept the fact that they are just friends. When she spots Vijay with Maya one day, laughing gaily and obviously enjoying himself, and Maya likewise, Radha is wild with rage and concludes that the reason Vijay has not been meeting her recently is because he is two-timing her with Maya. No self-respecting girl will have that from any guy! She has to complain, she has to cry out her anger aloud. But who to? Who else but that night-traveler, the moon! The chanda has to lend his ear once again to the complaints of the earthly-beings. Radha is singing a song from the remake of an extremely successful Tamil- Telugu movie called "miss(i)amma". The MD is Hemant Kumar, who is reported to have been so impressed by an S. Rajeswara Rao song from the original movie that he retained the music of that song in the Hindi version, absolutely unchanged. That song in Telugu was "brindaavanam-adi andaridi, GovinduDu andari vaaDe le". Maybe a discussion on "missiamma vs Miss Mary" is in order, like "devadaasu vs Devdas". Neither of us has seen the movie Miss Mary, and would like to see the movie before making further comments. ------------------------- We again have a pair of songs here. Guess either of these songs for full credit. Extenuating circumstances of films are in a class of their own. There is a saying -- "bhagwaan jab deta hai, to chhappar phaa.D ke deta hai", but in films this is extended to say "jab gham, dard aur dukh aate hain, to sab ek saath aate hai.n". Radha is angry and devastated with Vijay's two-timing and at the same time her father is pestering her to marry the dunce son of his rich friend, Thakur Rudrpratap Singh. The son's name is Teja :-) Despite that, Radha tearfully accedes to the pater's directives, because she has ostensibly realized that Vijay was nothing but an advantage taking b**t**d, and a two-timing slimy lizard, and/or a despicable relative of this type of abhorrent creature. ;-) Sure enough, Vijay also gets wind of this. And he is flabbergasted too. He thinks that it is Radha who is the bewafaa, and that she is the one who is the relative of the slithering reptile alluded to earlier in this clue. :-) In this pair of songs Vijay and Radha trade insinuations about each others fidelity and accuse each other of other of being a betrayer of trust. 26A. bhulaa do dil se tum guzare hue ra.Ngiin zamaane ko bhulaa do, haa.N bhulaa do ishq ke sazaa fasaane ko tamannaao.n kii bastii me.n, a.ndheraa hii a.ndheraa hai kise apanaa kahuu.N koii jo apanaa thaa paraayaa hai The Emperor and the Empress of melody getting together to sing this song. On the day that Radha is scheduled to tie the nuptial knot with Teja, Vijay is with Maya, bemoaning the loss of his love. Maya, the ever insightful and intuitive female apprehends the possibility of their having been a 'shaq ki talwaar' in the picture: it is probably she (Maya) who is the cause of the break-up, she figures, and says as much to Vijay. Maya has been watching Hindi movies too, and is able to put herself in Radha's shoes (or heart, if you rather will). Maya also provides Vijay with a powerful antidote to the poisonous situation -- straight out of the movie "ghazal". She inspires Vijay into going and attending Radha's wedding, to sing a 'sehra' for her, along the lines of "rang aur noor kii baaraat kise pesh karuu.N". An inspired Vijay (there is a woman behind every inspired man) realises that the key to getting Radha back is Rafi's voice, AND HE HAS IT (the lucky bugger!) :-) Confident, he feels he is equal to any task now, that he is no less than anybody now. He decides to leg it for the bride's place of habitation and to ask her why she has really dumped him. She had said that she loved him, she said she wouldn't desert him if it was the last day of her life, she made thousands of promises. What about them? Thinking thus, he legs it to Radha's, and appearing at her doorstep, confronts her with a "whatever happened to your promise?" question. To help him in his rhetorical singing (if indeed such a thing is possible), certain words that Radha sang to Vijay in the past (which we had placed off the record till now) return to life in the voice of Sushma Shrestha. 27. o kahane vaale mujhako farebii kaun farebii hai ye bataa wo jisane Gam liyaa pyaar kii khaatir yaa jisane pyaar ko bech diyaa nashaa daulat kaa aisaa bhii kyaa bevafaa ye tujhe yaad nahii.n To those who puritanically maintain that this is not a duet, we would like to add that HMV, which held the rights to this RDB MD'd film labeled it a duet, and we go with them. This moment of milan has indeed come after a long time. Let us digress a bit and ponder about the fate of luckless "husband-to-be" of Radha. In a standard Hindi movie, a character with a name like Teja would be fit only to be depicted as a villain, who would have grabbed a knife or a pistol at this impunity of Vijay, and 'shamelessness' of Radha. This would have also been an added justification for Radha to deserted him. But ours is a simple love story, and has no place for villains. Teja's fate is, therefore, left as an exercise to the readers ;-) Does he get to marry Maya, the other eligible person? ;-) Does he renounce the world and go to the Himalayas? Does he just go stark staring mad at the myriad choices that Life is offering him at this point? We do not have an answer for any of these questions! ;-) We are only bothered about what Radha is saying to Vijay in this SumanK song, whose music has been copied, almost note-for-note for a recent solo by a Rafi-wannabe. The will live happily ever after in the hustle and bustle of the daily train from Borivili to VT and back, and in the ration ki dukaan ki kataar ... but they will be happy together, till death do them part. They're saying some such thing, though not in so many words, in this last song in our film. Our film ends on this songful note. BTW, if many of you thought that Rafi singing for Raj Kapoor was a rare event, what do you think of back to back clues in an RJGK with Rafi singing for Raj Kapoor?! This song is from a film that featured two of the "hit" stars of the era - RK and Suraiyya. 30. aa.Nkho.n me.n tum banake pyaar aa gaye gulashan me banake bahaar aa gaye dekho vo kaliyo.n ko aaye hasii.n baadal kii chhaayaa me naache khushii Strike rate: [11/15] SONG: taararii aararii aararii, ye saavan rut tum aur ham STATS: Dastan | Suraiyya | Naushad | Shakeel [Vijay] Movie loosely based on Wuthering heights, I thought. Well, you wonder what if Rafi had sung more for Raj? I wonder if Chitalkar had sung for Raj? Did so in just one movie, Saragam, and I thought the voice sounded just right [Sami] With a Naushad tune, it HAS to be a happy ending :-) ------------------------- And now for the individual scores: Deepak B Gothe 11/30 Ramki 16/30 Madhusudan and Aniruddha 19/30 Sami 20/30 Nita 23/30 Swatee Naik 23/30 Renu Thamma and Neeraj Deshmukh 23/30 (To Neeraj and Renu goes the "lET lateef prize" and the credit for showing us what it means to be in "intezaar".
