The response and participation was indeed heart-warming. Also remarkable was the number of first-time entrants. A big thank you to all the participants who have made this the most popular RJGK quiz so far --- there were in all 70 teams and 93 participants. A special word of gratitude for our beta-testers, without whose help during both the setting and the grading of the quiz things wouldn't have been so nice. We are most grateful for the generous comments that the participants have directed towards this quiz. It was very rewarding to see so many people enjoy themselves. The theme of the quiz was appreciated by all, thus supporting our belief that songs are life, and that life is a song. :-) Thank you all, Swapna & ND ====================================================================== List of participants ==================== Following is a list of everyone who participated in the quiz, in alphabetical order. 1. The topic was very "full of life", i.e. very enjoyable.:-)) 2. The choice of songs is good. I enjoyed the quiz a lot. 3. The highlight of the quiz are the introductions before every clue. 4. And the greatest thing I liked about this quiz is that it is short and snappy. Neither did I have to take the "laThi" of my Webster's dictionary, nor did I have to keep wondering if there is an end to the text. [K. Vijay Kumar] :- Why this choice to limit the number of qustions to 25? I felt there was an unwritten rule fixing the no. of RJGK questions at 30, and for Chitrahaar at 25. You seem to be one of the "kids" that Dr. Surjit Singh refers to fondly in his posts. Maybe I should say the same, too. Practically all songs from the post-1970 era does not augur well for us oldies. # [ND & Swapna] :- We wanted to keep the quiz short and sweet. As # regards the choice of songs, most songs featured in this quiz are # quite good by any standards --- this was especially for people who # believe that good music ended in the pre-70s. [Rajiv Shridhar] :- I saw your repost with the deadline, and decided to spend a few minutes sending in my entry. I haven't participated in an RJGK or Chitrahaar for some time now, and thought I could spend some time on this one. Guess what? I've spent more than a few minutes, almost two hours. But it was real fun once I realized how you were threading the songs together, and it became more and more interesting. If I couldn't derive the answer directly from the lyrics clue, I was usually able to either scan through the write-up for the clue or to sort-of guess at the song through the "thread" you've woven around the whole package. [Vandana Sharma] :- The subject of the quiz enticed me into taking a look at it and then deciding to participate. This is the best I have done so far in all the quizzes I have participated in, which is less than five! You were very generous with the clues and the ITRANS helped. [Vandana Venkatesan] :- One of the main reason for my liking this quiz is because it is one of the few quizzes to focus almost entirely on songs from the late-70s and 80s. Also liked the gradual progress of the quiz from songs expressing simple delight in living to more philosophical musings, disillusionment etc. Nicely organized! Cluing was perfect! You made it pretty simple to read, yet didn't give away too much. Finally a request - please include in the results post the other songs you know of the films in the quiz. # [ND & Swapna] :- We will give it a shot. [Snehal] :- This was the quiz I was really waiting for; for it's about one of my favourite song-topic. I really enjoyed, rather liked your comments before every (it's different matter, I couldn't identify all songs) clue about life and how the song projects those feelings. Now flames; isn't it a rule of RMIM nowadays ? :) I didn't expect songs like 'Pyar Zindagi Hai' as I feel it's not at all a fit for this RJGK's theme. Same about 'Tere Bina Zindagi Se'. If they are fine then ommition of 'Ye Zindagi Usi Ki Hai' will need lot's of explanation! I can understand non-inclusion of some of my favourite songs from this genre as they are very old and mostly obscure. But let me take this opportunity to mention a few: Zindagi Khwab Hai - Chhoti Chhoti Baaten (1965) [ Mukesh ] Qismat Ka Likha Na Tale, Na Koi Bas Chale, Ye Kya Hai Zindagi - Parichay (1957) [ Rafi ] Zindagi Usi Ki Jo Zindagi Se Khele - Kinara (1950)? [ Lata ] OK what about this classic Manna De song: 'Jeevan Se Lambe Hain Bandhu Ye Jeevan Ke Raste' ?! I am surprised that this song didn't find a place in a RJGK featuring 'The Song of Life' !!! Also, is it necessary to have "jeevan", "zindagi" etc. words in the song, for it to qualify ? How about 'Naiya Teri Mazdhaar Hoshiyaar' from Awaraa ? Isn't it actually about life ? Also isn't life about living ? Do you think 'Jiyo To Aise Jiyo Ke Sub Tumhaara Hai' a misfit ? I also missed one of the finest song of this type from Shankar Jaikishan: Ajab Hai Daastaan Teri Ai Zindagi, Rula Diya Hnsaa Diya Kabhi ... I also missed one C H Atma song (though obscure, thanks to HMV it's available on one of C H Atma's compilation) from Bhai Sahab (1953?): Unchi Nichi, Nichi Unchi Dagar Jeevan Ki, Pyare Sambhal Ke Chalna Manzil To Hai Badi Door ... Well, before you dump me saying 'he knows only to complaint'; a big thanks for this quiz. Very good theme indeed, well prepared quiz. # [ND & Swapna] :- As you must have noticed, our selection focus was # most certainly on the post-70s music. Also, the number of songs of # life is so vast, it is virtually impossible to satisfy everyone's # choice (so we only satisfied ours). All the same, thanks a lot for # reminding us of some wonderful gems from the olden times. [Abhay] :- I must congratulate you for following the 3-part format very consistently in the quiz. This was also a very well-formatted quiz from indentation and spacing point of view. (You didn't expect this reaction, right ?). There is some room for argument, whether some songs are really songs of life. But a superb quiz overall. I was pleasantly surprised to see some songs here. Not that they are not good, or unrelated. Some of these songs were my childhood favourites. I haven't heard them in years. In fact never ever heard them again after my short-lived fascination from school days. Still, I could crack them in a second !!! God knows what kind of indexing mehanism our brains use ! I don't like these songs as much, but they revived some nice memories. Thanks for that. I will mention these songs as we go along. Quite enjoyable quiz ! Great effort. [Roomi Sinha] :- That was a REALLY COOL [i.e. easy/encouraging/feel good/NICE song selection] kinda quiz!! Thanks! :-) There's hope afterall! [Ravi Krishna] :- Nothing personal but the quiz is very boring. I could answer all questions (except one partially) without even thinking twice. # [ND & Swapna] :- One person's wine is another's poison, we suppose. # A lot of other participants found that 'easy is good'. :-) [UVR & Pavan (RaVan)] :- Very good topic, lovely song selection and good clueing, though a trifle too easy for most songs. Very naughty of you to have no Rafi songs in the list, and to fill it up with KK. Very naughty, indeed! Too many familiar songs, too. I didn't check, but I'm sure at least 95% of the songs are in the ISB. Makes the quiz kinda easy with all so many clues about film name, MD, lyricist etc. [Abhay] :- Are you not aware of many songs by Rafi having the word zindagee in it, or you didn't want to include them :-) :-) There are so many KK and RDB songs. This was expected, but then as expected is my complaint, I am sure. :-) # [ND & Swapna] :- BaDe 'Rafian' bane phirate ho, even after getting # song no. 12 you claim there are "no Rafi songs"? :-) Or do you not # consider that to be a Rafi song? ====================================================================== Statistics by artist selection ============================== Contrary to expectations, this quiz did not reflect the biases of the organizers as much, barring the obvious KK-RDB leanings. There too, the choice was more governed by selection of popular and good songs that we liked a lot, which put them predominantly in the post 1970s era. No attempt was made when selecting the songs to achieve parity in terms of representation to various artists. Yet, in retrospect, we have not only managed to cover a fairly decent range, but also include some artists who are typically not represented often enough in RMIM quizzes or discussions, as evidenced by the statistics below. Unknown 1 ====================================================================== Answers and song-specific comments: ================================== Predictably, most of the clues had a fairly high 'rate of solvency'. There was least amount of 'Agreement' on clue 8, which was designed to be our toughest clue. We were apprehensive about including a telefilm-based clue, but surprizingly a lot of people remembered 'Janam' and the song in clue 24. The 'Aandhi' song in clue 11 was a sitter, of course, and everyone got it. The reason to include it --- that was one song everyone would most certainly expect in this quiz, and we didn't want to disappoint. :-) We have tried to be accurate to the best of our knowledge regarding the pstats for the answers. In case there are any mistakes, omissions etc we will greatly appreciate your help in fixing those. Also, please add to the list of other songs that we have appended to each answer. For each song, we have first repeated the clue from the quiz. The clue number is followed by the solvency fraction --- number of people who got it right. The clue is followed by the answer along with some pstats, and then we have listed some other songs from the film that we remember. In the end, there are song-specific comments by some of the participants and our response. Here are the answers... ______________________________________________________________________ 1. This is really a surprise. I am amazed. REALLY! BTW I like the tune of the mukhada. Esp the chage of pace and scale while singing "mile duniyaa to mazaa hai, ki mile dil bhi"!
