It is always a difficult task to set a quiz on a singer as popular and versatile as Kishore --- to choose a mere 25 from the vast number of songs he has sung is indeed an unenviable proposition. To limit our choices (and to make our life easier by using songs that were easily accessible to us), we decided to focus on a period very dear to us, yet often derided on RMIM --- the post '70s. This didn't really make matters easy, though, for within a few minutes we had a list of over a hundred songs that clearly belonged in such a quiz --- some hugely popular, others exquisitely sung, some more with remarkable music, and many with all of these features. While all these songs are our personal favorites, many of them would have been rather alien to the typical RMIMer making the quiz far too difficult. We will discuss some of these songs in the coming days on RMIM, and hope to convey why we find these songs magical and special. We also tried hard to eliminate the obvious choices (e.g. Aandhi, Julie etc), and avoid songs featured in previous quizzes. So we changed our mindset a little --- instead of only bringing Kishore's best songs to you in this quiz, we tried to cover songs that somewhat represent the range of Kishore's output with other singers, lyricists and music directors that dominated this period of music. Having listed such artists our song selection was now motivated by a need to match the resulting pstats as well, in addition to our affinity for these songs. Thus, we acknowledge that many of your favorites (and some of you have been generous enough to list them out to us) did not find a place in the final list; and some of the songs selected even we don't rate among Kishore's greats. The consistently upbeat mood of the songs chosen reflects our philosophy behind this quiz --- to have fun with the clues. And therefore we hope that you enjoyed the quiz as much as we did... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Song Statistics: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Here is what the final song selection turned out in terms of distribution among various co-singers, lyricists and music directors. Singers: =-=-=-=- Annette 1 Anuradha Paudwal 1 Asha Bhosle 12 Lata Mangeshkar 10 Mohammed Rafi 1 Notably absent:- -------------- Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Amit Kumar. ### Songs with these singers that could compete with the selected songs were hard to find. Also, our focus was slightly more on getting different music directors than singers. Music Directors: =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Bappi Lahiri 3 Basu-Manohari 1 Kalyanji-Anandji 3 Khaiyyam 1 Laxmikant-Pyarelal 3 Rahul Dev Burman 9 Rajesh Roshan 3 Ravindra Jain 1 Shiv-Hari 1 Notably absent:- -------------- Sachin Dev Burman ### This was a difficult decision to make. Kishore has numerous hits with SDB in the early '70s (e.g. Tere Mere Sapne, Sharmilee, Mili, Gambler etc). On the other hand, SDB's output in the '70s is not a true representative of his work. Including only post-'70s songs does not do justice to an artist of SDB's calibre, and to include the best of Kishore-SDB combo duets one would need to look at the pre-'70s music as well. Since this was contrary to our focus on the post-'70s music, we decided to altogether exclude SDB songs from this quiz. Lyricists: =-=-=-=-=- Amit Khanna 1-? Anand Bakshi 6+? Anjaan 2 Gauhar Kanpuri 1 Gulshan Bawra 1 Indeevar 1+? Inderjeet Singh Tulsi 1 Javed Akhtar 1 Majrooh Sultanpuri 6+? Rajendra Krishan 1 Sahir Ludhianvi 2 Notably absent:- -------------- Gulzar ### Gulzar suffered essentially due to over-exposure on RMIM. Most of his popular songs are too well-known, and his obscure ones are really obscure. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Participants: =-=-=-=-=-=- There were 52 entries with a total of 78 participants. Here are a few excerpts, with our responses marked with ###. We divided our participants into a few categories based on the nature of their overall feedback... The conspiracist category ------------------------- Amol:- "aisaa lagataa hai ki is kuuT mein ve gaane chun-chun ke bhare hue the jinakaa ITRANS-me.n naamo-nishaa.n na ho. `saajish saMkalpanaa' kaa kahanaa hai ki shaayad ve vahaa.n se haTaa de gae ho.n. [yah to bas us bechaare kaa kahanaa hai jise puure P-stat maaluum hone ke baavajuud bhii gaane yaad nahii aaye.n :-( ]" The "I want to be a quizmaster too" category -------------------------------------------- Pritam:- And this one is for you two... K: dulhaa banoonga main, baaja bajegaa, dulhan banegi to mandap sajegaa ?????? : phir tu meri maang yun bharega... jo bhi kaha woh kiya Clue : Anil Ambani would like to know who the cosmetic surgeon was! But his promises stay !! ### While we did send Pritam the correct answer over email, we will leave it here for you to guess... :-) The "What's in a name" category ------------------------------- A-ha:- For the team of A-ha !( Aha= Amol+ Hema +Arunabha) we have a second name , too :) Haa ! (=Hema + Amol +Arunabha) :) ### Having complained ad infinitum on the difficulty of the quiz, we thought of another name for your team --- thus describing the three phases of your solving the quiz. First look at the quiz: Haa --- looks easy! Detailed look at quiz: Aah --- too tough! When you got the clues: Aha --- gotcha! So you actually found the quiz easy, given that you chose the last name... :-) The "jaane kahaa.N gaye woh din" category ----------------------------------------- Vijay:- I don't think your selection of songs lends credence to the claim that music was not dead in the 80s. Even if we stick to the 70s & 80s only, the list must include such Kishore greats like 1. kora kagaz tha yeh man mera (Aradhana) 2. diivana karke chhoDogi lagata hai yun hamako (Mere Jeevan Saathi) 3. tere mere milan ki yeh raina (Abhimaan) 4. jaanejaan, DhuunDhta phir raha huun (Javaani Divani) 5. bhuul gaya sab kuchh (Julie) 6. ik chatur naar (Padosan) 7. gum hai kisi ke pyaar me (Rampur ka Lakhman) 8. haal chaal Thiik Thaak hai (Mere Apne) 9. Jai Jai Shiv Shankar (Aap ki qasam) 10. Holi ke din dil khil jaate hain (Sholay) 11. hava ke saath saath (Seeta aur Geeta) 12. bhali bhali si ik suurat (Buddha mil gaya) 13. kashti ka khamosh safar hai (Girlfriend) 14. sun ja ae ThanDi hava (Haathi mere saathi) 15. ab chahe sar phuute ya maatha (Daag) That lends some credence to your argument about music not being dead in the 70s and 80s. Ramki:- I am really weak on post-80 songs, so no wonder I've done pathetically in this :) I am really surprised at the number of songs I finally managed to get :) I am also surprised at some of the omissions: Kishore duets, post 70, melodious etc. etc. and how could you leave out Aandhi songs? Most of the songs are of the 'pop', foot-tapping variety (I'm not saying they are bad, mind you) but not the soft, hummable Kishore numbers I love. What about : Jeevan ki bagiya mehekegi..(Tere mere sapne) Tere mere milan ki yeh raina.. (Abhimaan) Maine kasam li..(Tere mere sapne) etc.? Snehal:- I liked almost all songs you selected (the ones I could crack). Your sub-clues are just what people like me would need! It's not easy to remember these songs, for I don't have most of them and haven't heard them for years. Since period 1970s-80s provides a very very vast choice for Kishor songs, I can't really complain about not including x or y. But I guess some sogns from Manpasand (RR), Abhinetri (RDB?), Khatta Mitha (RR), Aandhi (RDB) would have made it more easier on me :-) I was going through KK-Lata duets I found lots of stuff from this period that really like: Gore Rang Pe Na Itnaa Guman Kar - Roti Chal Dariya Me Dub Jaayen - Prem Kahani Parbat Ke Pichhe Chambela Gaon - Mehbooba Shokhiyon Me Ghola Jaaye - Prem Pujari Tum Ko Bhi To Aisa Hota Hoga - Aap Aaye Bahaar Aayi Chudi Nahi Hai - Gambler (how did you miss this one ?) Sun Ja, Aa Thandi Hawa - Hathi Mere Sathi Kanchi Re Kanchi Re - Hare Raam Hare Krishna (You don't like Dev Aanand ?) Chanda O Chanda Kisne Churai - Lakhon Me Ek Are Chupke Se Dil Dede - Maryaada Aaj Madhosh Hua Jaae Ye - Sharmili list can go on.... Chetan:- Hey, thanks for your cryptic clues! It helped in getting at the film name even for unfamiliar songs! Now let me make the "expected" comment :) Why did you choose to ignore Kishore's 40s-50s-60s songs? There you would have found a number of wonderful duets with a number of singers including Lata, Asha, Geeta, Samshad etc. You could have at least made an exception for Sulakshana Pandit's first song! It would have been a wonderful tribute to Kishore the composer. Coming to the 70s and 80s, I was looking for some of my favourites such as - the Aandhi trio, Baaton Baaton Men or Khatta Meetha or Julie for Rajesh R, one or two of the many engaging moon songs like 'chaa.Nd ke paas jo sitaaraa hai', 'cha.Ndaa dekhe cha.Ndaa', 'chaa.Nd churaa ke laayaa huu.n' and many others. As you probably know, I was looking in vain. Sigh. Kalyan:- You left out the pre-70's duets of KK and this unfairly leaves out songs from that period and this topic may not repeat for a while. I wonder what the kids have against pre-70's songs :) Even KK ones :) And what was "novel" about leaving out those songs. As a result several MD's who had given KK great duets (as well as solos) were left out. e.g. Madan Mohan - Manmauji, Chacha zindabad etc OP Nayyar - Naya andaz, Baap re baap, Bhagam bhaag etc SJ - Shararat, New Delhi SDB - Lots of them Chitragupta - Ek raaz Hemant - Do dooni chaar, Miss mary And many others like Salil, Husnlal-Bhagatram, AnilB etc had good duets with KK, even if not many. The other impact of your choice was that you couldn't include any of his great duets with Geeta Dutt or Shamshad, two singers he had a great chemistry with: with Geeta: "De bhi chuke ham dil", Jaal "Aankhon mein tum", Half-ticket with Shamshad: Meri neendon mein tum, Naya Andaz ### We have addressed this issue in the prologue. The "aayaa hai mujhe phiir yaad woh zaalim, guzaraa zamaanaa bachapan kaa" category ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Pradeep:- Needless to say, I am emotionally attached to most of these songs, as they belong to the 'golden period' of my life so they have become 'golden' by definition. That does not mean that I will remember them all in this 'silicon period' of my life, when I can only find these few mins. of free time :-) Oh well ... Ikram:- I liked the song selection immensely. Lots of songs that I haven't heard in a looong time. But, they strike a chord within you so that you recognize them with the same warmth that you would show towards a long-lost best-friend from school. The "We belong to RAMLI" category --------------------------------- Hema :- One thing is for sure. You guys are huge fans of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh. Hey you could have called it a Rishi-Neetu quiz.;)) Anyway, I like their songs too, so I am happy. I wish you included "ek main aur ek tu", I just remembered this song with great choreography!:)) Thanks for including "lekar ham diiwaana dil". It is one of the best songs we have in the history of Indian Cinema. No I am not exaggerating and am not even "April fooling" you.:) The choice of those songs that I could get right was very good and those I didn't get was wrong ofcourse.:-)) Overall the quiz was enjoyable: properly formatted (I like text justified on both sides), short clues along with some nice songs. HOWEVER, the quiz was DIFFICULT!!! Tell me, how could you manage to keep that difficulty level so high, even as keeping the quiz interesting! You must be magicians, you sure know how to come out with cute bunnies and 'sawing them in half' tricks at the same time.(terms courtesy: Ketan) ;-)) Pritam:- Thanks to both of you for cranking up my mental gramaphone. I thoroughly enjoyed it ! but for those 2 TAKHLEEF songs... I thought there was a lot of Amitabh ! but chalta hai... Shweta:- It is amazing that out of 25 songs, you only had one duet for Rajesh Khanna. ### Looks like Kaka is a lot luckier and better with solos than duets. :-) The "Classical Electrodynamics of RMIM" category ------------------------------------------------ Arunabha:- Very difficult quiz. I prob. could only identify only 6-7 (def. < 10) songs without outside help. Each time I attempt a new quiz, I am convinced that I am illiterate as far as those singers/MDs etc. go. First it was Neha's quiz on Mukesh which was too scary even to attempt. But even KK seems no different. (Sad thing (for me )is even your Asha quiz was sooooooo tough ) But I was at least glad to see that the songs were recognizable, and the difficulty lay in the choice of unfamiliar lines (chosen cleverly) Here I am sure some of the songs and I will never cross paths :) Anyway all said and done it was fun solving the quiz , for the same reason as it is to solve Jackson's Classical Electrodynamics problems. They are a pain to solve, but once you get the right answer, you feel really thrilled. :) :) Please set an easier quiz the next time . Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease ! The "4 across, 7 down" category ------------------------------- Kalyan:- Overall a tough quiz, I thought. Clueing was good. Fun to read but not much help. IMO cryptic clueing rarely leads to the song but it helps confirm the answer and/or resolve which of the guesses is correct. I love KK duets and it was great to have a quiz on them. His "bulund" voice generally dominates the duets. Ashok:- A tidy and compact quiz, with economically written clues that pack lot of information. Often too much information, perhaps? In a large number of clues, film name and/or opening lines have been given away. Wouldn't it amount to trivializing the quiz? ### As it turns out, not quite. Many people found the quiz difficult than usual. Samir & Ruchi:- I like the "crossword" like format where there are both direct and cryptic clues... ofcourse in some cases both of them were beyond our reach.. but overall very interesting and enjoyable quiz.. keep up the good work.. Shyamali & Jaydip:- We had fun doing this quiz but is was also a frustrating experience because there were so many songs that seemed familiar but we simply couldn't remember them . When the answers are out , there will be a lot of oh-so-it was-that-song and if-only-I-had-remembered and other regrets , I'm sure. The clues were interesting and innovative and fun. We sure liked the new format. Balaji & Malini:- The hints for the movie names were really appreciated. As you can see, we could guess the movie name for the one clue we didn't crack yet, assuming we got the rest right :). Hope you have a great response. And considering that there is a surfeit of RDB songs and the quiz is heavily 70s centric, you should have it. Anirudha Deglurkar and Madhusudan:- Here is our entry. Good selection of songs. The "hint" section of the clues *are* cryptic, but very well written. Lot of times, we could appreciate the crypticism (if there is such a word ) even more after we solved the clue! :) Enjoyed the quiz thouroughly. Neeraj, are you considering starting a series like ATMJH for post 60's songs (I think Ashok suggested it....). Would be great! ### We hope to start one with a discussion on some of the songs featured in this quiz. Don't know about a regular series as such, but would certainly post some of our favorite songs from this era. The "I like him, I like him not" category --------------------------------------------- Anup:- Some things that I liked about this quiz were 1) Lyrics clue: for most of songs you gave decent size clues and not teasers. It makes life of participants easy. 2) Trivia clue: The change is good. and above all your choice of male singer in all these songs is just SUPERB! What I did'nt like about quiz. 1) Almost absence of Gulzar's songs from Aandhi, Ghar, Thodisi Bewafaii etc. I think this was deliberate as you did'nt want to be blamed for too many personal biases. :) 2) Too many average LP songs. ### Regarding Gulzar's omission, we did go through many of his duets, but found almost all of them to be way to well-known. Qazi:- I Have to say, I had mixed feelings during the process of solving them. This being my first participation in the RJGK, I think it couldnt be at a better time than solving quiz on my most favorite singer Kishore Kumar. On the other hand, I wish I could solve all 25 of them accurately. But before ending, I would like to thank both you and Renu for the wonderful quiz. I definitely had a blast solving them. The "I'm a wannabe statistician" category ----------------------------------------- Ashok:- Let me take it on faith that the songs featured here constitute a representative sample from the top drawer for 1970s and later. If that is the case, I notice the following features in the msuic of the period: * Sadness, unhappiness, separation, misery, conflict and such have been abolished in the lives of the characters. Almost all the songs are upbeat and of those most are upbeat in a superficial and shallow way. Very few have any depth of feeling, seriousness of purpose, or even interesting moodiness. (I agree with your decision to exclude the very famous duets, e.g., 'Aandhi'. My comment applies to the remainder of the soundtracks of the period.) * The set of singers has totally thinned out, judging by the very limited range of partners. No major hit came involving Kishore and one of: Kavita K., Alka Yagnik, Sulakshana Pandit (other than 'Door Ka Rahi'), Anupama Deshpande, S. Janaki, Najma, Kanchan, Salma, Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey, Amit Kumar, et al. * Most recent debut of an MD covered in the quiz is 1981 for Shiv-Hari. No MD who debuted after that has done interesting work with Kishore. (Note that I am taking the perspective of a person that doesn't know well the music of the period and is using the songs in the quiz to gauge the overall music of that era. Accordingly, these are not criticisms of the quiz, but my conclusions about the state of the popular music. My only criticsm would be: If this represents the best, I wouldn't call it the second golden age!) ### We have elaborated on this in the prologue, but let us say some more. Firstly, generalizing an entire period of music based on a sample of 25 (no matter how "representative" it is made out to be) would be unwise. We agree that the set of popular singers (especially women) had become somewhat limited out in the '70s and '80s. Of course, there were occasional flashes in the pan --- we could have certainly included some of their songs (such as "O yaaraa" [Kaash, Anupama Deshpande] "tuu meraa kyaa laage" [Oonche log, Salma Agha] "You are my darling" [Hum naujawan, Peenaz Masani] etc) but we found other songs that we liked more to include in the quiz. Moreover, the few music directors who debuted in the early '80s (such as Anu Malik) and during the post-1986 MD boom largely limited themselves to newer singers, barring the occasional 'Shahenshah' (Amar-Utpal) --- but not many duets there. A possible candidate was "husn ki vaadiyo.N me.n" [Waaris, Uttam-Jagdish], but again other songs prevailed. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Example: =-=-=-= 0. lata: ham chup rahe kuchh naa kahaa kishore: kahane ko kyaa baaqii rahaa both: bas aa.Nkho.n hii aa.Nkho.n me.n iqaraar ho gayaa This powerful film pitted two great actor-stars against each other for the only time. I know this one... Oh, darn!! This was the example :( :) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Clues: =-=-= The songs were overall perceived by most participants to be slightly on the difficult side. Yet, the average score for the entries was a reasonable 17.5 out of 25. The number of entries that got each song correct is written in square brackets next to the clue number. Also, for some of the movies we did not recall the year, or missed (or may be wrong) on some p-stats. Please feel free to correct us wherever you can and fill in the missing info. We have included some song-specific comments from you along with our response (marked by ###) with some of the answers (see above example). =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 1. Balaji & Malini:- Nice adaptation of 'Irma La Douce'. The first directorial venture for Shammi Kapoor, which apparently sank without a trace at the box-office. 'goyaa ke chunaa.nche' episode was really funny. Jagadish:- An absolute BEAUTY of a song. The best part of the song is it starts off in Adi Taalam (8 beats) and goes on until KK sings Aise na rooth raaton mein ... mulakaaton mein. During that duration its Rupaka talam (6 beats). Then back to Adi talam again ! Surajit:- Zeenie rhymes with bikini; brings back memories of the hormonal time bomb I was back in the early 1970s. Ravi Meruva:- Beats me. But it will be fun to watch Sanjeev Kumas dressed like a pirate. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 2. Just fun? Surely you grossly understate. Being stranded in the mid air on Dev Anand's lap is every girl's dream come true! :) Hema was atleast 10 pounds lighter at that time which was good for Dev! Ramki:- Nice clueing of "Kept our promise.." But cable-car and dodging cops were giveaways. Hilarious picturization :) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 3. Pintu:- This would have saved so much time with those ~~~ like logoN~ ko~~~~, kahane do~~, kahate hee~ raha~ne do sach jhooT ham kyooN. sab ko bataayeN.~~~~ Pritam:- I am almost dancing in my chair now ! Kishore was too perfect for AB. logon ko kahane do ...kahete hi rahne do....... Too GOOD YAAR !! ( God how I want to Kill Shabbir for singing in Mard, Coolie etc, etc ) Anand:- The Amit - Rekha chemistry at its best on screen (and in real life too at that point of time). Amitabh is barefooted as he enthusiastically joins the dance and does a couple of his trademark steps. It seems that they enjoyed doing the song more than we enjoyed seeing it. Movie is not that good. Soundtrack is much better. Vandana:- Drab song. Pradeep:- kya gaana hai, especially if you hear it in Rekha's voice and see her perform this live. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 6. Song: dekha ek khwaab to ye Film: Silsila (1981) *ing: Amitabh Bachchan, Rekha, Jaya Bhaduri, Sanjeev Kumar Singers: Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar Lyrics: Javed Akhtar Music: Shiv-Hari Ashoke:- A small correction. The place you mention here is not Amsterdam, but Keukenhof. It is approx. half an hour drive from Amsterdam (towards south). The famous Keukenhof flower-show is held here each year from mid-march till mid-may. However, the shooting of "Dekha ek khwab" was not done inside Keukenhof garden but in a tulip-field outside. On the other hand the song "Yeh kahan aa gaye hum" was shot inside Keukenhof garden. Pritam:- What ???? just cud not think of any other.... after a Amitabh-Rekha song..... Contagious haan ! I don't blame you guys !! Had some great songs... these two.. Anand:- People will fill reams of paper with their comments on another of Yash Chopra's "oh-so-different, oh-so-mature, oh-so-much-'human relationship'-component" film so i will restrain myself. Rekha wears a small nose ring (or whatever it is called, (you can correct me)), in this song. That makes a difference to her personality and the song picturization (not the singing of course :-)). Matches it up with a silver/white kurta, extremely appealing. Surajit:- This movie, and the concept behind the casting, remains one of the crudest, most vulgar displays of sheer bad taste ever to hit the screen. The songs were pleasant enough, but terribly sung--and in any case, they weren't good enough to rescue the movie. Sami:- I like the other duet more.. no, not the one in which Lata is awful Chetan:- I like this song a lot. A promise the MD pair failed to live up to for the most part. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 7. [47] asha: jis galii ke tum, us galii ke ham par ye majabuuriyaa.N ya-haa! kishore: tum yahii.N kahii.N, ham yahii.N kahii.N phir bhii ye duuriyaa.N ya-haa! This song must bring back a whole series of memories. Remember it is Neetu Singh singing and dancing here? Song: le kar ham diiwaanaa dil Film: Yaadon Ki Baraat (1973) *ing: Taariq, Vijay Arora, Dharmendra, Zeenat Aman Singers: Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri Music: Rahul Dev Burman Pintu:- I was happy to have got this one, since first time around it seemed to be "ye kyaa gaanaa hai, yaa-haa and all!!" But second time that was what got me the answer! Nita:- Nice song! :-) The other songs of this film tend to get overlooked becoz of "churaa liyaa hai..." Pritam:- That Neetu Singh may have people going nuts !!!! I must say nice Cryptic clueing here.... although the songs were pretty recognisable by the lyrics for me. ### Neetu Singh makes a guest appearance in this film, only to sing this song onstage with Taariq. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 8. [48] kishore: baadal se chham chham sharaab barase asha: saa.Nwarii ghaTaa se shabaab barase kishore: buu.Ndo.n kii bajii paayal, ghaTaa ne chheDi ghazal yah raat gayii machal re How the mighty have fallen --- the no. 1 commercial hero and the top artsy actress! But we will be loyal and not lift them up to their feet, for that's what they want. Song: aaj rapaT jaaye to Film: Namak Halaal (1983) *ing: Amitabh Bachchan, Smita Patil, Shashi Kapoor, Parveen Babi Singers: Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle Lyrics: Indeevar ? Music: Bappi Lahiri Anand:- Prakash Mehra demonstrates an extremely poor taste in song picturization (in this particular song). Balaji & Malini:- A very crudely picturised song, considering it was AB and Smita. Vandana:- Smita Patil was a really sexy woman as is obvious from this song, but she really doesn't fit too well in the standard Hindi film heroine mold - the silly "Ui maa bachaao" type. Her sex appeal better enhances movies like Arth. Jagadish:- Just a point to note here, Shabana would qualify as the #1 artsy actress, not Smita, isnt it ? Your clue did result in me searching quite a bit :) of course if my answer is wrong, u can ignore this trash :) ### That's why we left the wording on that ambiguous --- both Smita and Shabana would qualify as 'top' artsy actresses, right? :-) Sami:- One of my fav. Bappi Da tunes ### We think its one of Bappi's better compositions too, albeit some not-so-great lyrics. The interludes here are remarkable, especially a beautiful flute piece between the second and third stanzas. Chetan:- This song starts off with Kishore and Asha joins in later, right? It is when Asha starts singing that you realize how hopelessly besur Kishore had been singing! ### Kishore? Besur in this song? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 9. [10] anuradha: tuu hai mere dam se, mai.n huu.N tere dam se ho jaise jism-o-jaan kishore: khile khile tan hai.n, mile mile man hai.n ab duurii hai kahaa.N For an artist lost in his beloved's arms, here's a song composed by Kalyanji-Anandji. Anuradha Paudwal from her pre-T-series days. Song: khoye khoye rahe terii baaho.N me.n Film: Kalaakar (1983) *ing: Kunal Goswami, Sridevi Singers: Kishore Kumar, Anuradha Paudwal Lyrics: Indeevar Music: Kalyanji-Anandji Pritam:- EEEEEE ! this one gave the worst headache I had for some time now..... moment I saw the lyrics.. I don't know why I remembered a Hemant-Lata duet patli kamar hai ... tirchee nazar hain..... and then I had it... this one ruined almost my two full days..... I wud like to know which one of you selected this song here ?! The problem is the visuals that come along with the song....... ULTIMATE TAKHHLEEF.... both of them No offence meant to you !! ### This song certainly was a bummer to most everyone. If you are the kind who'd rent and watch a movie to guess a song, this must have been punishment. We like this song especially for the nice synth / guitar pieces in the beginning. Anand:- Awful song. Unrelated comment: It does not matter if KA copied the song "neele neele ambar" from the same movie, Kishore made it an immortal, "Out of the world" (my definition of "out of the world" , so please do not jump :-)) song. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 10. He, too, is equally struck with her beauty. Or is it RDB's music? In our country, this is how they film romantic duets. Song: kajaraa lagaake gajaraa sajaake Film: Apna Desh (1973) *ing: Rajesh Khanna, Mumtaz Singers: Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar Lyrics: Anand Bakshi Music: Rahul Dev Burman Pritam:- One more TAKHLEEF ..."...the man &$$#@##" Mohan:- ni.ndiya chura ke, bindiya chamaka ke, ghu.nghtaa utha ke, naina jhuka ke, ......tamasha deekha ke, paisaa banaa ke jaiyo na (chay pilaa ke, paan khilaa ke, biRi pilaa ke jaiyo na) Surajit:- Back in Bombay, I used to own an EP of this movie which had this song on one side and "ronaa, kabhii nahii.n ronaa" on the other. To date it's the only record I've broken :-) deliberately or otherwise! Sami:- I dragged my friend to this movie just for this song and he still curses me :-) ### This is one of the better songs from the film, besides 'suno champa suno taaraa' and of course 'duniyaa me.n logo.n ko'. The film is really lousy, but Ikram will disagree. Ikram:- Mumu!! *sigh* =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 11. Long-time assistants to R. D. Burman in their own element here. Song: dariya kinaare ek ba.ngalo go porii Film: Sabse Bada Rupaiya (1976) *ing: Mehmood Singers: Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri Music: Basu Manohari Surajit:- I blame Malini for this; the song is suddenly cropping up like a weed all over RMIM. OK, I admit it's rather fun, though. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 12. [47] kishore: ek din vo mile asha: roz milane lage kishore: phir mohabbat huii asha: bas qayaamat huii Would Peter have been proud of this reincarnation? The hero-heroine recreate the story of his previous life to trap his murderess. Song: ek hasinaa thii Film: Karz (1981) *ing: Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim, Simi Garewal Singers: Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle Lyrics: Anand Bakshi Music: Laxmikant-Pyarelal Pradeep:- clean bowled again, but this is not fair. You have provided an entirely movie-based 'chitrahaar-class' clue in this RJGK quiz! Mohan:- ek murdress thi, ek victim tha, kya intension, kya plot, kya jamana (time) tha :) ### Mohan's versions of the lyrics certainly merit an RJGK of their own. :-) Ikram:- The second line sounds like Kalyan talking about the so-called "golden era", nahee?? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 13. Song: apane pyaar ke sapane sach hue Film: Barsaat ki Ek Raat (1981) *ing: Amitabh Bachchan, Raakhi Singers: Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar Lyrics: Anand Bakshi ? Music: Rahul Dev Burman Surajit:- The only song I CAN remember from this movie is "kaaliiraam kaa phaT gayaa Dhol" or something idiotic like that. But regarding the lyrics you've quoted, wouldn't "sunii hai jo batiyaa" make more sense? ### Agreed. We went by phonetics in our itransification --- Lata pronounces the lines as "suunii" instead of "sunii"... Nita:- I preferred the Bengali version of the movie.. "Anusandhan".. seemed more fitting...don't know why. Pritam:- Sweet just too sweet ! the Bengali translation of the songs of this movie are also very good...In fact I love them more than the Hindi ones. Anand:- Excellent tune! The audio i believe is owned by INRECO and is not easily available. Several "jhankar" variations are there in the market. I recently got the INRECO tape for the Bengali version of this movie called "anusandhan". Anusandhan is the same movie in Bengali with the exact same songs and scenes. The songs in bengali sound more appealing. This one is called "amaar shopno je shotti holo aaj" (sung by KK and Lata). the tune is the same and the words have meaning. The tape has all songs from "anusandhan", so at least i have the consolation of listening to the same tunes if not the hindi lyrics. There is also a piece of dialouge in Bengali between Amitabh, rakhee and prema narayan before the 'kaliraam' song. The other side of the tape has songs from "Ogo Bodhu Sundari", Uttam Kumar's last film. The film was an adaptation of "my fair lady". The lyrics for "anusandhan" have been penned by Gauri Prasanna Mazumdar, the music is of course by RDB. ### Seems like everyone's a fan of the Bangla versions... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 14. We are very pleased to see you happy. But then we are crazy about you! Song: tum ko khush dekh kar Film: Aap ke Deewaane (1979) *ing: Rishi Kapoor, Tina Munim, Rakesh Roshan Singers: Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi Lyrics: Anand Bakshi Music: Rajesh Roshan Balaji & Malini:- This song probably shouldn't belong in this quiz. Or, maybe you should have had a few more duets with other male singers. ### We didn't find any other duets good and just-enough-popular with other singers. But at least the Rafians must be happy... :-) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 15. Song: le jaaye.nge le jaaye.nge Film: Chor Machaaye Shor () *ing: Shashi Kapoor, Mumtaz Singers: Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle & chorus Lyrics: Indrajeet Singh Tulsi Music: Ravindra Jain Shyamali & Jaydip:- The reference to DDLJ ( a modern classic : -from the flame wars) was very amusing. Jagadish:- The modern classic clue was great. Maybe you should have put in a ?? after it :) Mahadevan:- When KK sings here, his "vocal chord" is in the 'Shashi Kapoor mode" Only KK can do this!! Chetan:- Was the thief the only one making lots of noise :) ### Evidently not... :-) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 16. It also affirmed the era of a new superstar. This romantic duet composed by R. D. Burman, though, is picturized on his younger brother's character. Song: kah duu.N tumhe.n, yaa chup rahuu.N Film: Deewar (1975) *ing: Amitabh Bachchan, Parveen Babi, Shashi Kapoor, Neetu Singh Singers: Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi Music: Rahul Dev Burman Anand:- Sung with great enthusiasm by Kishore. My parents tell me that we saw Deewaar, 3 times in the very first week it was released and i have no recollection of those viewings, save for this song. So it must have had an early impact :-) Vandana:- In this song, A & K have the very same rapport that makes Fred & Ginger so charismatic! This is from an era when Asha matured into a singer confident in her abilities and this confidence shows in all her songs. Or maybe the Asha/RDB relationship was a happy one at that time, that really makes a difference - As can be seen from some Lata/CR songs; or from Fargo! No one can deny that being in love makes all the difference in the world! Pradeep:- One of those few songs where I truly enjoy the filler (nahin re nahin ...) =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 17. Sounds Gulzarish? Actually it's Gauhar Kanpuri's lyrics and Bappi Lahiri's music. Song: jalta hai jiyaa mera bhiigii bhiigii raato.n me.n Film: Zakhmi (1975) *ing: Sunil Dutt, Rakesh Roshan, Reena Roy Singers: Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle Lyrics: Gauhar Kanpuri Music: Bappi Lahiri Pradeep:- Definitely and assertively, my lord, this doesn't sound Gulzarish. ### The point, Pradeep, was to somehow include Gulzar in the quiz --- with KK, Asha and RDB already there, why leave him out? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 18. Ok! who is a Amitabh fan or a Rekha fan among you ! ### Hey, the '70s-'80s *was* the Amitabh-Rekha era... And the Rishi-Neetu era... and the RDB era... and... :-) Ramki:- Nice clueing, which I could understand only after I got the song (For once, I can proudly say I did not rely on the subclue :)) BTW, who is wearing the sombrero? I don't remember.. ### Amitabh. Anup:- This was a stupid movie and I was more dispappointed knowing its a Vijay Anand movie. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 19. Song: achchhii nahii.N sanam dillagii Film: Raakhi aur Hathkadi (1972) *ing: Vijay Arora, Asha Parekh Singers: Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri Music: Rahul Dev Burman Sami:- Ordinary song made great by wonderful rendition. Vandana:- Kishore pouty - Asha indulgent : it seems like they are ones doing the acting and not Asha Parekh & Vijay Arora! Cute song. ### We really adore this song --- but it is sheer misery to see the picturization. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 20. A very intelligent one !! Pintu:- This song kind of never "comes back" to the original "mukhaD.aa", does it? It keeps on moving ahead. nverma:- It was hard to remember the first line of this song - with so many 'tune-changes'! ### Khaiyyam does this trick kabhii kabhii :-) --- like at the beginning of 'jaaneman tum kamaal karate ho' in Trishul. Mohan:- Hey, it always pays to flirt with another girl. Remember laDaki patane ka #1 farmula in 'tejaab' ? But this song has other formulaes also, persuassion for example. tu hai inta hi ta.ng to mai ra.ngi tere ra.ng le mai chali tere sa.ng Did Sahir put the poet in him a rest, went back to his High-school college days for this song ? What a contrast from 'kabhi-kabhi mere dil me khayal aataa hai... Surajit:- Incidentally, I seem to remember that the song which Rishi sings to Naazneen much to Neetu's discomfiture is another, much better song: "tere chahare se nazar nahii.n haThatii, nazaare.n ham kyaa dekhe.n." But I could be wrong. Ikram:- The Khaiyyam & Sahir fans must be gunning for you two, now... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- 24. 'kudrat' means nature, not luck. Surajit:- What's with the "what luck" clue? I thought KUDRAT meant "nature." Has Annette sung anything besides this song and that silly one from SURAKSHAA: "Gunmaster, I love you, you're mine, Gunmaster G-9"? Chetan:- What's the deal with the penguin voice? ### Mea culpa on the 'kudrat' translation. Annette's generally used whenever a 'phaarin' voice is needed --- like "dilbar mere" in Satte pe Satta. She's also lent her voice to some title songs for TV serials (Hello Inspector) and ad jingles (she's the voice the Kelvinator penguin coos "That's the coolest one" in). =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Results: =-=-=-= And finally, what everyone has been waiting for --- the roll of honor, the hall of fame, the list of winners...
