Just as sweet and hit as the songs of films "Baiju Bawra" "Aaraadhana" "Adalat" "Anarkali" "Chori Chori"... Attention of millions of people might have been on Atlanta Olympics as it was the first day. But not for 35 people who wanted to meet 34 other people who have same taste for Hindi Film Music. I donot know how the song 'Aaaj Unse Pehali Mulaaqaat Hogi' was picturised. Perhaps hero would have been meeting his heartthrob. Eventhough it is not the same case with me, I hummed that throught my drive. The excitement was because I am going to see some people with whom I spoke over the internet everyday, whose tastes I know without talking them. By the time I reached Nisha's House, It was 1.00pm. There were 4 or 5 people already sitting in chairs below the tree in the small lawns out there. Nisha was questioning me why I was late, which I answered countless times throught my life uniquely. I was about to answer 'mi tho raste se aa rahaa tha' but Abhay cut it off saying a big Noooooo for that song. The differences started already.......??? There were two persons wearing the paper badge Ketan and Chetan respectively. I knew them on the net but I did not know that they would be coming over. We shook hands and Chetan handed over me my paper badge. It was really nice of them to have flown from East for this meet. The other people who were already there were Abhay and Archana, Rajesh Bansaal, Sangeeta Thakur, Fatima, Anup Pandey,Nisha and Anoop Mohan (Hosts), Nisha's family, Anirudh Deglurkar and Deepaali. There was a bad traffic jam that day on HW101 so everyone was late. Prince and his newly wed wife Alpa walked in. Prince had a 'botthal' in his hand which he brought to raise a toast for the meet. Balaji and Malini then came in along with Kalyan Kolchaala. Then Preetam (Gopalaswamy),Vandana (Venkatesan), Manoj and Monica Goel , Neha, Umesh Desai and finally came Vish Krishnan. Everyone brought food along with them. We had a true Indian Cuisine Table set up there for the lunch. People were already having their own discussions on Burmans, Latest war on the net. We had a great lunch with Pooris,Chenna, Biryaani, Brinjaal, Bhelpuri, Milk sweets,Pulaao, Raitaa....... many more. I could not even taste some. But I noted them in mind and reserved them for dinner. Because I knew the way the proceedings were going on we had a 'khawwali' ahead. Finally Abhay and Anup made everyone sit in the front hall to start some of our activities. The first activity was the audio quiz conducted by me. Finally people were made in to three 'mukhdaas'. Abhay,Kalyaan,Preetam,Neha,Baalaji,Maalini...... Naushaad Group. (Some people were objecting to this name.......) Ketan,Chetan,Aniruddha,Vandana,Fatima,Sangeeta... Roshan Group (Looked everyone satisfied to me......) Vish,Manoj,Monica,Archana,Anup,Nisha......Madan Mohan Group (Looked happy too......) Before really starting the quiz, we remembered that it was Jul 20th (July 21 in India), the death anniversary of Ustaad Sajjad Hussain Saab. I played his Lata composition 'Woh to Chale Gaye Ae Dil' from film Sangdil. I could see Vish,Preetam,Kalyaan,Chetan really humming this immortal song, nodding their heads. Then I played interludes, starting music, Aalaapanaas, dialogues for 50 hindi film songs. All were cracked without any problem. It was like 'short out side the off stump and no deep point' for them. I was expecting blanks for Aalaapna of 'Duniya Na Bhaye mohe ab to Bulaale'. Naushaad team missed it. But Roshan Team (Ketan?) caught it without any problem. Naushaad Team missed 'Phpolon Ka Taaronka'. It went to wiketkeeper Ketan. Madan Mohan Team missed 'Yeh ladkaa haaye allah', promptly caught by Naushaad team. The acid test of 'Agar Sunle tho ek nagmaa' went to Ketan, He guessed in the last minute and was aplomb with delight. It was tough one. I played 'Pyaar kiyaa to darnaa kya' 'ai maalik tere bande' for micro-second. Still they found these. I am dead sure, even if I play for nano-second they would find those immortal songs. Overall, everyone participated and I felt that to derive more pleasure, the complexity needs to be increased a little more. Then we broke for tea, fruit punch, etc etc. Then we reassembled at around 4.30pm for Trivia quiz by Anup Pandey. He quizzed us on rare singers, rare lyricists, rare combinations. the questions were funny and Arup (Diehard KK fan) also was as funny as KK. He asked a question on some lyricist 'Dhelavi'. It was such a question that I neither remember the Question nor the answer. It went for an hour. It was 5.30 pm and Vish started the quiz of hindi film songs lifted from regional films. It was the idea of Vandan V , and Vish and Preetam made it happen too. We identified some and failed to identify for the difficult ones. Two difficult songs 'Dil se dil ki dhor bandhe' and 'Salaamat Raho (I think)' were guessed by Baalaji. I am appending the report from Vish,Vandana as it is in the following. The idea came from Vandana and Preetham, and its main purpose was to draw attention to some interesting Hindi adaptations of non-Hindi originals and vice versa. The focus was Hindi movie music, but the originals or the adaptations came from a variety of sources, e.g. movie songs in other Indian languages, movie songs in non-Indian languages, Indian folk music, non-movie Indian songs, traditional or classical music from other countries etc. The quiz consisted of playing a piece of the non-Hindi composition, either from the beginning, or (if the song was well known) from the middle somewhere. The responding team was required to guess the corresponding Hindi song. If they could not, the question would pass on to the next team and so forth. An attempt was made to involve as many Indian languages as possible, but in the nature of things, some languages are have more eaily available recordings than some others. In any case, it is somewhat unbelievable and perhaps inexcusable that we did not include any SD Burman songs! Now the discussions between Prretam,Vish,Abhay on this copying scene were still on. It was 6.00pm. We regrouped for Abhay and Arachana's 'Katori Quiz'. They will give us a 'chit' with 3 words and we have to tell a song whose mukhdaa has all the three. Damn, we could'nt find 'janaab' 'khayaal', 'kyaa'. I am leaving it for you all. No one could find the song with 'ajnabhi' 'hum' 'ek' No one could find the song with 'tamanna' 'sitaare' 'zara' Afterthis the 'champagne botthal' of Prince was opened and most of the people went 'zarra sa chumloo naa rrre baaba naa'. After this the live entertainment of songs started. First to sing was Deepali Deglurkar. She learned Hindustaani Classical for many years in Nagpur. She sang 'aaj jaane ki jid naa karo....' and 'jaage dard jaage ishq' Aaarti (friend of Nisha) sang 'Holle Holle Holle chalo more saajana' and a ghazal 'tujhe dekh ke ab meh kya ghazal sunaoo'. Babli (friend of Nisha) sang Punjaabi song 'ik meri akh kashani' Preetam 'Na tum hame jaane' and another HK solo (????) Vish 'Mujhse peheli si muhabbat mere mohabbat na maang' (Noorjehaan) 'Nimbua Taley Dolaa Rakh De Musafir (Traditional UP song)' Monica: Presented her 'shers' and a ghazal (????) Sangeeta: ' Kun mujhe maut ke paighaam diye jaate hain Yeh sazaa kam to nahin hai ki jiye jaate hain'. Balaji: A duet of Talat and Lata (????) Nisha: 'Justuju ji ki thi' (Umrao Jaan) What I found is that music lovers when they like a song, they will sing it irrespective of whether it was sung by Male or Female. Sometimes if they like it, they will sing for both too. Then Anup (pandey) started with his 'Chitra Haar' Quiz. Lots of RK songs came with RK in most of the songs eating 'ghaas'. Inbetween, some recordings contained subtitles/film names etc. Anup made them 'non-competitive quiz' on the fly. He took lot of time and put great deal of effort in recording these for us. Thank you Pandey. It was 10.00pm and we had our dinner with new dishes. The desert was great!! 'Ras malai'. Then we chatted for another 2 hrs and it was mid-night when we said bye-bye to each. Chetan and Ketan went with Vish to have night long discussions. Balaji and Malini who are shifting from California to Oregaon also waited for this meet to be over to proceed to new place. It was great to be there with all the RMIMers to sing with them, eat and talk with them. I could see Kalyaan delighted just with the mention of Geeta Dutt, Ketan with Burman/KK, Abhay with Rafi, Vish with OPN, Vandana with Asha and so on..... Everyone had their loyalties/favourites differing radically from others ... but everyone was united for hindi film songs and RMIM. -- Harish Suvarna sundu@mti.sgi.com
